Why Are Cats Expensive

The cost of a purebred kitten reflects the expense of bringing these cats into the world. The gene pool for a lot of breeds is not as large as the wider population.

Breeders must choose lines carefully to ensure they are not inbreeding. Often, particularly in countries such as Australia, this will mean importing lines from overseas.

So not only are they paying a premium price for the cat, they have the added costs of additional vaccinations and veterinary checks, flights, and quarantine. It will be necessary to house him separately to avoid unplanned litters and spraying.

The stud house must be secure, well ventilated, protected from the elements, easy to clean and large enough for the cat to exercise as well as house his litter tray and a comfortable bed. This avoids the necessity of separate housing for an entire male cat.

Depending on the breed, stud fees can range from several hundred to several thousand dollars. Health and genetic testing: Certain breeds of cat have a higher incidence of genetic diseases such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and polycystic kidney disease which breeders must rule out in their breeding cats.

There are several ways this can be achieved, such as genetic tests, or screens for certain diseases such as hip dysplasia and deafness. Registration fees: A registered breeder must be affiliated with one of the numerous cat councils which are located in most countries.

Veterinary care: All cats require veterinary care, at an absolute minimum, annual health check-up as well as regular parasite control for fleas and worms and vaccinations. The queen will need a clean bill of health (as well as proof she is FIV and Fell negative) before she can mate with a stud.

Emergency medical treatment which can include disease, infection, difficulty giving birth, which may necessitate a cesarean section. A fully weaned kitten will eat four times a day.

Cleaning litter trays and floors Feeding and grooming cats Cleaning the stud house Care of all cats Socializing kittens Time playing and interacting with the stud Answering kitten inquiries over the phone or email Updating website or social media Preparation, travel to and from and exhibiting at cat shows Travel to and from the veterinarian for deserving, vaccinations, health checks This section looks at just how much money it costs to raise kittens from birth to 10-16 weeks when they are ready to go to their new home.

This is the only permanent form of identification, and we recommend this even if it is not a requirement in your country. Breeders do everything they can to keep kittens produced healthy, sometimes things go wrong and the breeder will pay veterinary costs, or should the worst happen, replace a kitten who has passed away if they are at fault.

Kittens knead at their mother's belly when they feed; this helps to stimulate her milk… She enjoys photography, gardening and running in her spare time.

The purchase price any given person paid for their cat can vary wildly, from free up to potentially over £2,000 in some cases, with figures in this ballpark usually being reserved for star-quality kittens from impeccable bloodlines that stand a strong chance of going on to be future show winners themselves. Trying to determine the average cost of a cat is almost impossible; if you adopt a kitten, you’ll probably be asked for between £60-£200 as a donation towards the shelter costs, whilst a very broad average for a pet-quality cat of popular breeds like the Persian or Siamese fall around the £600 mark.

Some reasons are specific to the traits and type of cat in question, whilst others are more universal. In this article we’ll look at both factors, and outline some main reasons why cats of some unrecognised-by-the-GCCF breeds are so expensive to buy.

Every cat breed and defined type has by definition, unique features that set them apart from others. However, some breeds and types possess such unique and unusual features that they cannot be found in any other cat type; and if this feature or trait is highly desirable to buyers and no other cat displays it, this makes them in great demand.

As well as the health implications of some such breeds or types with genetic defects, in some cases, crossing two cats with a certain combination of the relevant genes will result in unviable fetuses and/or resorption or still births in all or part of the litter, reducing the number of potential cats that can be bred from and potentially, litter sizes too. There is a sliding scale with respect to cat breeds in terms of their cost.

In this instance ‘market forces’ refers to popularity i.e. demand. If the demand is high for a particular cat breed then the breeders will take advantage and put up the price.

With respect to overheads, wild cat hybrids can cost more to create and I’m thinking of the first filial hybrids such as the Savannah F1, which is the product of a mating between a male serial and a female domestic cat who has been selected for the purpose. I know that these mating scan be difficult which partly accounts for the high costs of first filial Savannah cats.

Another obvious factor is that they are very desirable among society’s ‘elite’. They are perhaps the most expensive purebred cats on the market today at anything up to $50,000 for a particularly fantastic specimen.

People do query the high price of British Short hair cats, hence the title. The British Short hair is not a rare cat but it is in the top 10, perhaps, in popularity which forces up the price.

It is the same modelling which causes house prices to rise in desirable areas. Breeding these cats is not an exact science and therefore there is natural variation.

Personally I prefer random bred cats and have always lived with them. The blue British Short hair is the most popular of this breed.

Before qualifying, I worked in many jobs including professional photography. These wild cats have long, slender bodies, and the design on their pelts might remind you of the fierce animals that roam the forest.

But you might have noticed something that caused you to take a step back- they cost a pretty penny. They are expensive because it is hard to successfully breed a domesticated cat with a Serial.

Savannah cats are beautiful, loyal pets that require a lot of work and attention. Breeders take regular, domesticated cats and mate them with exotic African Serials.

Another thing that you will need to take into consideration is that Savannah cats are not legal to own in every state and county; be sure to check with the official legislation wherever you are. And again, as we said above, some places ban people from keeping these cats as pets, especially ones that are closer to being Serials.

You will need to check the laws of the area you live in if you are considering buying a Serial cat. Usually, Savannah cats between the F1-F3 generations will differ in terms of price between males and females.

expensive cat most breeds cats costing
(Source: www.catsincare.com)

This is due to the fact that F1-F3 male Savannah cats tend to be infertile from cross-breeding. So, breeders have to wait until at least the fourth generation in order to have a male that is capable of mating.

The next factor that makes Savannah cats so expensive is how much it costs the breeder to actually breed them. But many breeders choose to purchase several of these cats so that they can have a higher chance of getting their desired result- which puts them way beyond $10,000.

The breeder needs to provide the appropriate housing for their cats as well as the proper food. Considering that Serial cats eat raw meat, this will certainly add to the overall cost.

Although you should never get any pet without having done the proper amount of research, that is especially the case if you want to purchase a hybrid cat. Considering the fact that this breed is very new and people will be able to make a lot of profit off of them, a breeder may try to take advantage of you.

Now, let’s look at some different aspects of their care that will drive costs upwards. Savannah cats require a special diet consisting of both wet and dry food, especially meat.

expensive cat most ever
(Source: jamesahill.com)

This food needs to be of the best quality and it should not contain any corn since Savannah cats cannot digest this too well. You’ll want to give your Savannah cat some sort of combination of wet food and raw meat throughout the day.

If you own any pet, you probably find joy in spending money on toys and other gadgets to make them happy. The fact is, they are not dangerous at all and will most likely behave similarly to a regular domestic cat.

Savannah cats are characterized by being fiercely loyal and loving, and they require a lot of attention. Many owners agree that Savannah cats are loving, happy, and affectionate.

They’re a beautiful and majestic breed, and the expensive price you pay to get one will reflect the love people have for these cats. Persian cats are so expensive because the breed is highly coveted and beautiful.

No one would pay a high price for a tabby cat that you can find anywhere. Compared to other breeds of cats, they have a round face with big eyes.

expensive cat most breeds
(Source: www.youtube.com)

You may not be looking to breed your Persian cat, but that probably won’t change the price you pay for it. Many people who buy high-quality Persian cats are indeed looking to breed, so breeders need to charge higher rates.

If you want a young female, the price may be even higher because the cat will have more time to have kittens. And the price reflects the rarity and beauty of the white Persian cat.

The color, age, and orientation of the Persian cat make the price different in every situation, but you’re looking at the cost of 8,000 to 25,000. For instance, if you’re buying during kitten season, prices might be slightly lower because more Persian cats are on the market.

The average price you’ll end up paying may be higher or lower depending on where you live and how far you’d like to travel for your Persian cat. You’ll also pay more depending on the quality of the Persian cat, no matter the color.

If you’re looking for a Persian cat who will be a family pet, you probably don’t care about flaws like a thinner tail or a patch of different color fur. The color of the fur and eyes will be essential and how the cat looks overall.

(Source: www.pinterest.com)

You probably wouldn’t go to a breeder if you didn’t want a specific breed of cat. Unfortunately, not every cat is born healthy, so you’ll want to ask about its history, even if it is a kitten.

You don’t want to get your new buddy home to find that it needs expensive medical care. Facebook's groups may be a great place to find breeders and get feedback from others.

Is this higher or lower than the average cost of the cat? Being higher or lower than the usual price might be a red flag.

You may fall in love with a cat, even with health issues. There’s nothing wrong with that, but that might change the price of the Persian cat.

Cheaper Persian cats might have known health issues or a flaw in the fur. A Persian cat could have a tail with a slight kink, or a white Persian cat could not have blue eyes, which will make it cheaper.

cat breeds expensive animals
(Source: www.youtube.com)

The price you pay when you buy your Persian cat isn’t the only expense you’ll face. Annual check-ups are a great idea, but you also might need emergency care or flea medicine.

Although you may have to visit a few shelters, you’re bound to eventually find a Persian cat. It also means that you’re saving your new pet from a life in a cat and will become its new best friend.

This is a question that doesn’t have an easy answer because it depends on the person adopting or buying. Buying means you’ll know the breed of cat you’re getting with certainty.

Whether you decide to adopt or shop, I’m sure your new Persian cat will become your best friend. There are lots of things to consider when looking to get a Persian cat, and the price is a significant consideration in that decision.

You can get a slightly more affordable cat by purchasing an adult, especially a retired breeding cat (often called Kings and Queens by Bengal catteries), but kittens generally run a thousand dollars (USD) or more. This table is an estimate based on the prices of several Bengal Catteries, but you may pay more or less for your cat depending on local availability and the cost of caring for a Bengal cat in your area.

Prices are based on the age of your cat and how rare and desirable their coat coloration is. You can expect to pay north of $2000 if you have a spotted or marbled Bengal cat that also has a rare coat color. The more common colors such as brown will cost less because this Bengal cat is more available from breeders.

One important thing to note is that Bengal kittens cost significantly more than adult cats. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that Bengals are rare in the traditional sense of the term.

They aren’t necessarily challenging finding, but they are more expensive and less frequent than smaller non-hybrid breeds. For that reason, you can expect to pay a hefty price tag for this cat.

Hybrids also tend to be higher maintenance than other cat breeds, which reduces their numbers. Responsible catteries have incredibly high breeding standards, and the selection of Bengals that meet the requirements is relatively small.

cat expensive most breeds
(Source: www.youtube.com)

Avoiding inbreeding makes suitable matches between breeding cats even more select, limiting the options for a cattery that wants to maintain healthy animals. Breeders also have an incentive to keep Bengals rare because of their high costs of care.

Keeping the breed a little rarer and ensuring there is more demand for Bengal kittens than supply, helps breeders maintain their high standards for genetic quality and care of the cats. Bengal cats from a responsible cattery are also generally more expensive because they have invested a lot of resources, time, and attention into the care of their kittens.

Most Bengal catteries will have their cats spayed/neutered before giving the kitten to their forever homes. They’ll also have had their first rounds of immunizations, will have been checked for diseases, and may even have undergone genetic testing to ensure health.

Avoid your local pet store unless they are working with a shelter to sell rescued cats. While some pet stores do an excellent job of sourcing their animals from reputable breeders, many do not.

You should also ask about their training and medical care since responsible catteries work closely with a vet to make sure all their animals are healthy. Most Bengal cats are still purchased through a cattery, and you’ll often reserve a kitten in a current or upcoming litter before you meet the animal.

For many people, the comfort of knowing that their cat is likely healthier and less likely to develop a severe disease is worth the additional costs. From kitten to adult, you’ll be responsible for feeding them healthy foods, investing in toys and shelter, regular vet checkups, and more.

The last major factor to the cost of a Bengal cat is that your adoption fee not only pays for the expenses and care that your cattery has given your kitten, it also helps to pay for the care of your kitten’s parents. A lot of Bengals also end up at wildlife rescues instead of shelters because of their wild ancestors.

Sphinx is the most expensive cat breeds in the world, it may cost you around $2000 to $3000. Many rich pet owners are ready to spend huge sums to buy and raise rare cat breeds, so they chose the Sphinx for their special appearance and their wise personality.

Sphinx is known for its hairless look related to a natural genetic mutation, he is a medium-sized cat with large ears and around and wide eyes which give him a friendly and approachable appearance. Here you will find what makes Sphinx cats expensive, with the several costs related to having it with the estimated annual expenses, and where you can buy them.

Moreover, the fact that they are purebred, they are also hard to find and their demand is quite high; and when the demand is indeed higher than the offer, it is logical to have higher prices, this is the low of the market. Otherwise, good breeders look for saving and improving this rare breed, so they involve important expenses to offer cats with excellent bloodiness and health, Sphinx breeders pay about $1000 per cat the first year for maintenance, supplies, Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (Him) heart scans, blood tests, and veterinary care.

But before you purchase one, it is important to be aware of the estimated annual costs which are below: Annual Him scans: Due to a genetic heart defect, Sphinx cats may suffer from developing hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, for that reason annual Him scans are required.

However, these scans cost from $150-$500 depending on scheduling them on a veterinary specialist office or an HCP clinic cat. Sphinx cat requires a high-quality diet: due to their metabolism, which is fast compared to other felines.

For grooming your Sphinx : there are no costs unless you choose to bring them to a grooming salon to cut their nails and clean their ears for a $15, Except that it’s necessary to get yourself a special shampoo adapted to their hairless skin it cost between $6-$10. The question is, why are Maine Coon cats so expensive ? Actually, Maine Coon cats are not expensive at all if you see it from a different point of view.

A serious Maine Coon breeder will feed the Maine Coon mother and the kittens only high-quality cat food to make sure that the kittens grow and stay healthy. Often breeders have to change all their furnishings because the male cat has marked it and the smell doesn't go away anymore.

Actually, breeders make almost no money with breeding Maine Coon cats. Actually, you can get Maine Coon cats for less money than you think, but you have to be smart and to have to know your stuff.

cat bengal cats expensive breed why purebred temperament tuxedo snow hairless
(Source: www.cat-world.com.au)

Regular house cats are pretty easy to get and it costs almost no money. You can even often find kittens that you can get for free or you could adopt a cat from a shelter.

Breeding regular house cats is not hard at all and it does not involve a lot of costs. The regular house cat gets fed like always, the kittens are born and nothing really changes.

Without any documents, without being vaccinated, without being tested for health issues or similar stuff. The female cat does not simply come home and the breeder notices it is pregnant.

The breeder has a female and a male Maine Coon cat that meets all the requirements of a perfect Maine Coon cat. Nice ear tufts, a big snout, good teeth and much more.

Which means that the breeder has to pay multiple times in the worst case. If the female cat is pregnant the breeder starts to feed the cat with special food that delivers more energy, which is needed during the pregnancy.

breeds cat expensive most breed sphynx information facts
(Source: www.youtube.com)

This will ensure that every kitten in the womb has enough energy to grow and stay healthy. All kittens get checked for all the diseases Maine Coon cats are known for.

The breeder actually gets documents that approve that the kitten is in good health. Remember, the kitten you buy is your baby and someone before you took great care of it.

A lot of people that sell Maine Coon cats are not official breeders. They don't breed with cats that have a good family tree, and they don't make sure that the Maine Coon cat shows all the typical features of a Maine Coon.

That’s why there are more and more Maine Coon cats that are small, that don't have a big snout, that don't have those nice looking ear tufts. I don't recommend buying from such breeders, but this would be a cheaper way to get a Maine Coon.

Does the kitten show the typical features of the Maine Coon breed? If everybody knew this and not pay the full price for those kittens, those breeders would disappear, because it would not be lucrative anymore.

cats cost fortune awesome
(Source: www.youtube.com)

So I am not bashing people who had an accident and want to sell the kittens, because they don't have enough time and not enough space. I am only saying that people who pretend to be an official breeder but don't make sure that the kittens are healthy should be boycotted.

This means that you will get a happy and healthy cat and you don't need to worry about anything. However, all the work, all the stress and all the expenses that I have described above are not the only reasons why you should pay the high price for a Maine Coon cat with pleasure.

Let’s say no one would be willing anymore to pay the high price for a Maine Coon cat. Slowly, breeders would stop to breed Maine Coon cats, because it would get too expensive.

The market would be flooded with Maine Coon kittens that are not vaccinated or checked for health issues. As you see, sometimes a high price protects things from turning bad.

The price is high enough to at least cover the expenses of the breeder, but not so high that every wannabe breeder starts to breed Maine Coon cats because there is money to make. They make sure that the Maine Coon breed gets more and more healthy, and they are determined to continue to do that.

If you want to get a Maine Coon cat, I recommend doing your research thoroughly. For the last couple of months I’ve been looking online to buy a kitten.

I swear a couple of years ago you could pick them up to next to nothing. One of my neighbors used to have a sign in the window with ‘free to a good home’.

The only reason I can think is because it’s not quite kitten season yet therefore they’re not in high demand? I sold our little kittens (3)for 50 pounds each, just to pay for her mum to be spayed.

My sister was looking for a black cat a few months ago and I think she paid 200 for hers. £60 from our local cat rescue and that includes neutering.

Unless they are a special breed but a normal, run-of-the-mill moggy? The first one said I could only have an indoor cat (they recommended me a 9-year-old cat with Pin) as I’m within a 250 m radius to a busy road (I live on a cul-de-sac and the busy road is 30mph).

savannah cats expensive why cat pets4homes
(Source: www.pets4homes.co.uk)

While I’d be happy to rescue again, I’ve found myself with too much loved cats before. One that found me and I could never trace the owners and the other was my sister’s as she moved abroad.

People aren’t allowed to advertise kittens/puppies anymore but you’ll always find the odd one. Kittens do best in pairs as it means they have a playmate and learn acceptable behavior.

If you've never had a kitten before, are you fully prepared for how much work they are to rear properly? After faffing around with the rescues (I’ve contacted them about numerous cats between the ages of 1-5) but they’re always reserved within a couple of days.

When I was a child we always had cats that were not from a formal rescue but were through word of mouth from people my parents knew who were having to rehome them. It IS selfish to buy a kitten when so many cats desperately need homes.

I want to get one that's been neutered/spayed and chipped, so I expect the rescues will charge £50-60 for that, and I'm budgeting for it. (I’ve contacted them about numerous cats between the ages of 1-5) but they’re always reserved within a couple of days.

When people think of expensive pets, it is often exotic creatures that come to mind. In terms of more common household pets, there are many who would expect that dogs are the more expensive choice with some of the more unusual breeds selling for thousands.

It was given its name due to its resemblance to the Ocelot but was originally bred from Abyssinian and Siamese stock. Later, the American Short hair was added to the breeding mix and this is why Occurs have distinct markings, a silver color, and a strong facial bone structure.

There are 12 official colors of this cat, and they are known for their almond shaped eyes and dark markings. This cat breed originates from Europe and has a long coat consisting of a wool undercoat and a glossy overcoat that means it is adapted to living in a cold environment.

The origins of this cat date back to the era of the Vikings in Norway in around 1000 AD. The Norwegian Forest cat faced extinction following World War II, but an official breeding program was established by the Norwegian Forest Cat Club to prevent this from happening.

This breed is good at climbing and has a sturdy body, weighing between 7.7 and 10 pounds. It is a relatively rare breed with under 200 cats registered each year and this is probably why they are one of the more expensive cats to buy.

This is a slender cat with a medium body length and it is known for its fast pace as an Egyptian MAU can run at speeds of up to 30 miles per hour. Some distinctive features of this breed are the dark dorsal stripe that runs along their spine from their head to their tail and their green eyes.

They come in six colors, including caramel, smoke, silver, bronze, blue, and black. Distinctive features of this cat are a point coloration, a slender body, a triangular shaped head, and almond-shaped blue eyes.

The Koran originates in Primal, Thailand, and is one of the oldest stable cat breeds. They are distinctive due to their heart-shaped head, their coloring, and their large green eyes.

The Koran is an intelligent and playful breed of cat that is known to have good memories and will always find th3eir way home. This breed was first bred in 1987 in Montana, United States, by a breeder called Jeri Newman.

Originating in Russia, this land race domestic cat has existed for centuries but has only recently become a formal breed as the standards were not created until the late 1980s. It is closely related to the Norwegian Forest cat and shares many similarities.

Although it is a natural breed in Siberia and is the national cat of Russia, it is now selectively bred and pedigreed. The coat of a Siberian cat has three layers and comes in a huge variety of colors and patterns.

Despite the name, it is likely that this breed of cat descended from European cats and was brought to the United States by early settlers who wanted to protect their cargo from rats and mice. Their distinctive characteristics include their broad face, their dense coats, and their chunky bodies.

This is a cat with a solid blue-gray coat, a medium tail, and copper colored eyes. Males of this breed can grow significantly larger than their female counterparts as the average female weighs between seven and 122 pounds, while the adult male weighs between nine and 17 pounds.

The Rag doll cat is a breed which was developed by Ann Baker, an American breeder, in the 1960s. Their behavior is often compared to that of puppies as they are playful, follow their owners around, and enjoy being handled.

The Rag doll comes in six color variants; chocolate, seal, red, cream, lilac, and blue. The American Wirehair originates from upstate New York and is one of the rarest breeds in the United States.

This breed is available in a wide spectrum of colors, but some are not accepted at competition. They originate from Lakewood, California, in 1981 and are distinctive because of their unusually shaped curled ears.

This medium-sized cat comes in both long and short haired varieties and weighs between five and ten pounds. A strange fact about this breed is that the kittens are born with straight ears that begin to curl within 48 hours of their birth.

However, too much curl is a bad thing because the cat will be disqualified from a competition if its ears touch the back of its skull. The American Curl has a soft and silky coat that lies flat against its body.

The most distinctive characteristic of the Sphinx is its lack of coat, although they do have a fine layer of hair over their skins. The skin is soft to touch and is the color that their coat would be if they had fur, including any markings.

They also have distinctive facial features, including a wedge-shaped head, prominent cheekbones, large ears, a round abdomen, large paw pads, a thin tail, and a muscular body. As its name suggests, this breed of cat originates from Scotland and has folded ears.

The shape of its ears are caused by a genetic mutation that affects the cartilage. As the name suggests, this is a blue cat, although it comes in a range of blue-gray colors, from shimmering silver to slate gray.

One of the main reasons this breed of cat is so popular is that they have amazing personalities that make them ideal for family pets. They are affectionate, loyal, and develop close bonds with their owners.

The coats of this cat are so dense that you can draw a pattern in their fur with your finger and it won’t disappear until you smooth it out with you hand. However, there are many examples of Russian Blues living for as long as 25 years.

It was first created in 1994 by breeder Olga S, Miro nova during an experimental breeding program. This breed as a hair-loss gene that means they can be born either bald or with a coat.

Their temperament is described as curious, energetic, intelligent, peaceful, affectionate, and sweet-natured. They are a long-haired cat breed that is characterized by its short muzzle and round face.

The first time a Persian cat was shown in a competitive event was in London in 1871. The characteristics of the Bengal cat include a white belly, large markings, and a body shape that is similar to, but smaller than, an Asian leopard cat.

It first became popular with breeders in the 1990s and it was accepted as a new breed by The International Cat Association in 2001. They were first bred by Judge Frank who crossed a serial with a Siamese.

The size of the Savannah cat depends a lot on the gender and the generation. The difference is that for the Ash era, the African leopard was also thrown into the breeding mix.

They have both spots and stripes, pointed ears, and elegant features. Despite its wild genetics, the Ash era cat has been specifically bred so it is suitable for living in a domestic environment.
