Donald Trump will be suspended from Facebook and Instagram indefinitely and at least until the end of his time in office, Mark Zuckerberg has said, as a consequence of his support for the rioters who stormed the US Capitol on Wednesday. The US president was initially suspended from the social network for 24 hours, as a result of two posts shared to the platform in which he appeared to praise the actions of the rioters.

“The shocking events of the last 24 hours clearly demonstrate that President Donald Trump intends to use his remaining time in office to undermine the peaceful and lawful transition of power to his elected successor, Joe Biden,” Facebook’s chief executive wrote. The news of the indefinite suspension sparked joy inside the company, where Zuckerberg’s note was cross-posted to Facebook’s internal message board.

“I’m not always proud to work at Facebook, but today I am,” wrote Jake Blakely, an employee of Oculus, the company’s VR division. In private, however, some questioned the timing, noting that it came the day after the Democrats seized control of the Senate, after Congress certified the electoral votes for Biden, and after Trump ’s deputy chief of staff, Dan Saving, committed to an “orderly transition of power”.

There was also some unexpected opposition to the ban : Edward Snowden, the NSA whistleblower, tweeted that Facebook had “officially silence the President of the United States. Later on Thursday, YouTube announced it would temporarily suspend any accounts that post lies and misinformation regarding the elections or the storming of the capitol.

“After today’s mob violence inside the US Capitol, it is clear that the president’s social media accounts are the world’s most prominent organizing tool for violent white nationalists.” Alex Stamps, the former head of information security at Facebook, now a Stanford professor working on technology and civil liberties issues, said the events of Wednesday should help tech companies realize a line had been crossed.

“Future violations of the Twitter Rules, including our Civic Integrity or Violent Threats policies, will result in permanent suspension of the @realDonaldTrump account,” the company said when it first announced the ban. Previously, the president’s Twitter account had been protected because he is an elected official and his posts were deemed newsworthy.

Rioters stormed the Capitol building, forcing Vice President Mike Pence to be swept to a secure location and the Senate chamber to be evacuated. In screenshots captured by TechCrunch, Trump responds to the account ban by accusing Twitter employees of conspiring with his political opponents.

“We have been negotiating with various other sites, and will have a big announcement soon, while we also look at the possibilities of building out our own platform in the near future,” other tweets from the POTUS account read in part. In a statement to TechCrunch, A Twitter spokesperson wrote, “As we’ve said, using another account to try to evade a suspension is against our rules.

Twitter banned President Donald Trump's account Friday, citing “the risk of further incitement of violence” following the deadly insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday. Twitter has long given Trump and other world leaders broad exemptions from its rules against personal attacks, hate speech and other behaviors.

But in a detailed explanation posted on its blog Friday, the company said recent Trump tweets amounted to glorification of violence when read in the context of the Capitol riot and plans circulating online for future armed protests around the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden. In fact, Trump, who issued a statement Friday evening that denounced Twitter as an enemy of free speech and floated the idea that he might build his own “platform,” also posted it on the POTUS account, where it was quickly deleted.

Now that Trump has been knocked off one of his favorite pulpits, he may resort to other online channels such as Parker, a 2-year-old, more freewheeling alternative to Twitter that has become increasingly popular among the president’s most ardent supporters. Trump has always craved legitimacy and standing in the mainstream media despite his complaints about normal reporting he has long referred to as “fake news.” He won't get that on other platforms, she said.

The company also said Trump attorney Lin Wood was permanently suspended Tuesday for violating its rules, but provided no additional details. Dozens of QAnon social media accounts were hyping up Trump's Jan. 6 rally in the heart of Washington, expressing hope that it could lead to the overturn of the election results.

On Friday, the social media company permanently suspended Trump from its platform, citing “risk of further incitement of violence.” Trump, who had 88.8 million followers at last count on Twitter, was “platformed” by the company, following years of criticism calling on the social media service to block his account for the spread of misinformation.

“Boat” actor Sacha Baron Cohen, who had publicly asked Dorsey to ban Trump from Twitter, also applauded the news. Pablo Martinez Minivans / AP Twitter permanently banned President Donald Trump on Friday, shutting down one of the most consequential and ever-present accounts on the platform after years of refusing to do so because of his status as a world leader.

In the deleted tweets, Trump complained about the treatment he’s receiving, and claimed he is negotiating with “various other sites” while also looking at building his own platform “in the near future.” The accounts also proclaimed “We will not be SILENCED!” before they were shut down.
