In this post, we’ll layout precisely what the RUSTstagingbranch is, how to access it, and examine whether it’s the right environment for you to play RUST. RUST servers, without mods, exist in two primary forms to the player populous, standard and staging.

The standard live RUST build is a copy of the game that developers publish as a finished product. Publishing to live doesn’t mean that the new features aren’t prone to change, but they are, by and large, working as intended.

Depending on the new features’ size and scale, the developers may push content to stage some weeks before going live. Face punch does this to gather information on how the new features affect server stability and let players get their hands on the content.

One downside of playing on a staging server is the lack of stability and the frequency of patches and updates. Staging resets sometimes come with the need to wipe the entire map and player blueprints, making progression through standard RUST content nearly impossible.

In your steam library, either find the RUSTstagingbranch client or type staging into the search bar while on your games tab. Once you’ve downloaded and installed the client as you would any other steam title, you can launch the staging branch.

Face punch Studios, the development company behind RUST, releases an official update on the 1st Thursday of each month. There are many factors to take into account, some of which are out of Face punch’s control, which is a large reason for there being no “officially” posted update time.

This also means the RUST client updates are also required to be downloaded by the players who play on those servers. If the update does not immediately appear in Steam queue, exit and restart the program.

On rare occasion, the official RUST updates can trigger emergency downtime with a follow-up patch released shortly after. If critical bugs are discovered and reported by players, servers may even have to be forcefully wiped.

Servers with mods can tend to break on new releases and require additional time for updates to the respective mod (oxide) plugins. Many RUST admins take advantage of the updated downtime to reset and wipe their servers.

On the first Thursday of every month, assuming all necessary changes have made it into the next release, RUST servers will be “forced” to wipe their databases in order to upgrade to the latest version. This necessary database dump is required in order for the server to update to the latest version of the game.

The RUST team has been very consistent keeping their players updated on the status of the latest patch via their website and through their twitter. However, if you see the server and attempt to connect but it’s not allowing you, it’s likely due to the client mismatch error.

On the administrative side, in the server console or logs, you will see the player’s name, steam id, error code, and kick reason. The RUST Experimental survival PC game, while still in active development, is currently available for purchase through Steam.

Having started as an Early Access Game, RUST continues to require community feedback with each update. Feedback can be provided in numerous ways, but the primary method can be easily accessed through the in-game bug reporting system.

Throughout the history of RUST development, it remains to be heavily influenced by its player base and surrounding communities. In this post, we’ll layout precisely what the RUSTstagingbranch is, how to access it, and examine whether it’s the right environment for you to play RUST.

Giving players early access in a relatively sterile environment also lets them see any glaring exploits or faults in the proposed features.

This kind of server may sound appealing as you can get your hands on content early and play with new features before other players, such as the RUST weather system 2.0 (pictured above.) One downside of playing on a staging server is the lack of stability and the frequency of patches and updates.

Staging resets sometimes come with the need to wipe the entire map and player blueprints, making progression through standard RUST content nearly impossible. In your steam library, either find the RUSTstagingbranch client or type staging into the search bar while on your games tab.
