Is Ziebart Rust Proofing Worth It

If you often drive in central or eastern parts Canada, then your vehicle may be at risk of rust due to heavy usage of road salts and plentiful snowfalls. Cars have changed a lot in the past 20 years, and one key difference is the treatment and usage of metal.

Modern car frames are galvanized and well-protected, which means that you can still drive your “ugly” vehicle without any major problems. If you want a cheap prevention solution, simply wash your vehicle after it’s been exposed to deteriorating elements, such as salt, and you should be good to go.

Electronic modules are designed to prevent rust and can also be found in retailers such as Canadian Tire. Simply put, the spray is an undercoating that creates a barrier underneath your car.

Also, take into consideration that you’ll need to bring your vehicle in for occasional check-ups to ensure there are no cracks in the barrier. But it does require extra steps, such as drilling holes into parts of the car, so that the substance could be applied.

If you own a pick up truck and are considering going to Heart for the rustproofing program, make sure you understand that your warranty is void if you drive “off-road”. Last fall, after purchasing a new Dodge Ram pick up truck, we decided to have the additional rustproofing done by Heart.

We understood that you had to bring the truck back on the anniversary of the rustproofing for a wash, check up, and fix any nicks or problems for $70 annually. We live two hours away so on our way to Thanksgiving we dropped off the truck on a Wednesday, to pick it up on the following Monday.

Later in the day on Wednesday, the Sack branch manager, Josh, called us while we were on the road en route to our Thanksgiving destination. Josh claimed that it would cost us an additional $200 to have the truck washed due to its condition.

Our alternative was to come and get the truck, take it home and power wash it, including removal of taillights. Then we would have to drive back (2 hours each way for two people and two vehicles), leave it overnight, and come get it the next day.

He told us later that the person at the desk has a “script” that is used when the annual check up appointment is made. We own it, so we can drive down 60 miles of dirt roads to access our camp in northern Maine.

In contacting the customer service representative, Stephanie, at Heart International, we found her to be very helpful. So, if you plan on driving down dirt roads in your car or truck, don’t think Ziebartrustproofing is going to be a benefit for the longevity of your vehicle.

I have a '93 f-150 that I did nothing to and now it has some pretty substantial rust underneath it and I would like to try and prevent this with the new car. I had always heard that rustproofing was a scam but I can tell you that the Jeep looks fantastic underneath.

I have a 1998 Chevy that I spray in the rockers, finders, tail gate, frame and anywhere I can find. “Tell” them you want the axles and “all” the suspension parts; driveling; brake backing plates and “anything” that doesn't have good paint coverage coated with rustproofing.

If you were to submit a claim for repairing any rust (from the inside out & not from chips in the paint) & did not have proof of the 2yr. Inspection, no warranty Also, the contract used to say that if the vehicle did rust through (from the inside out & you had proof of the 2yr.

Inspection) that Heart would simply refund you your $$$ for the cost of the rustproofing. There are a couple of Heart stores here in the Rochester, NY area & I wouldn't go to any of them because of the p×ss-poor job they do in applying the rustproof.....like I stated in the beginning, any rustproofing is only as good as the person putting it on.

I know there are a ton of posts on rust, corrosion, the holy church of fluid film, etc. I'm starting a fresh one tailored to my situation, looking for input.

We get a fair amount of rain and snow each year, and they do use salt on the roads. I'm considering the Heart (franchise/brand) undercoating and rust protection, which is $500 total for the Tacoma.

The undercoating, according to their front desk guy who seemed relatively lucid, is a rubber-asphalt mixture. Their rust protection' is something totally different where they use something like fluid film in door cavities, tailgate etc.

The job supposedly takes 4-5 hrs where they clean the undercarriage and use an alcoholism drying agent before applying the undercoating itself. They supposedly warranty some component of the undercarriage for 10 years if they apply the undercoating within the first 12k miles of the vehicle (but that's likely marketing).

I live in one of the worst rust belts on the planet (Atlantic Canada), where undercoating is a must if you plan on keeping your vehicle for more than a few years.

I personally wouldn't touch undercoating that has the potential to trap moisture or clog drainage. I've seen older cars where that shit got brittle and cracked... well, the metal underneath was toast.

And that dude that's possibly hating life because he's gotta undercoat your car before he sees his GF on a Friday night. You think he cares? While this can also be true for Fluid film type product, it's much more forgiving in my books.

I've seen firsthand rubber undercoating fail, leading to Tacoma's needing new frames. It's more expensive to be sure, but I don't have to deal with the mess, and they have special wands they use for application (inside doors, frame, and the space between the truck bed and metal quarter panels).

I see there is one kind of close to me, and they say on their website that they are “Canada's Number One Rust Protection Company”. Yes Known is up here too, although I can't speak for the validity of their claim.

I've never had them undercoat a vehicle of mine, so I can't comment as to the product. Yes Known is up here too, although I can't speak for the validity of their claim.

Yup, I go to known for both my Tacoma and 99 Runner...if your curious about it, go buy a can of it for like 5 bucks then find yourself some rusty metal and give the rust a squirt. You will see the reaction...kinda like hydrogen peroxide on a cut, bubbles up.

Buddy arc welder I go to does an awesome job and gives the buggies a real good wash after completing. If you manage to get the socket on, the bolt is just going to snap with all the rust underneath the rubber.
