Check out our recent video showing how easy it is to make metal rust : I have to tell ya, making metal rust in fast-forward was even more fun than I anticipated.

Update: If you watch the video at the top of the post you can see how using a small spray bottle or one with a misting option makes this method even easier! After I placed my horseshoe in the container I poured some white distilled vinegar on top.

I didn’t measure but I poured just enough so that it covered the horseshoe and then I sorta swished it around on top. At this point, you’ll want to add peroxide on top of your metal objects.

I then sprinkled …err dumped… a bunch of salt on my horseshoe and the rusty color started to come out even more. Then I called Eric over because I was all excited to show him, but I wanted more bubbles and fizz, so I poured a bit more hydrogen peroxide on top.

After a few minutes, I swished the horseshoe around in the solution to sort of rinse off the salt and then patted it dry with a paper towel. You’ll see that it’s a bit rusty but don’t worry if it doesn’t look exactly the way you want, it actually rusts more than it dries.

It was getting dark outside, so I just let it sit overnight and the next day this is what my horseshoe looked like, next to metal that’s been rusting for years: I made a few more horseshoes prior to this one and let some of them sit for about an hour because I wasn’t noticing the color change right away.

If you don’t like how your metal looks after 10 minutes and air drying, you can always repeat the process and keep them in the solution for a longer period of time You’ll want to add a clear sealer to prevent the rusty patina from flaking off and staining anything they touch.

When I did seal them I just used some leftover Spar Urethane and a foam brush, but you can use any clear sealer and may prefer a spray-on kind. The second time I did this I went ahead and sealed the horseshoe after about 2 hours, but you can always wait overnight.

And if you have a specific technique that you prefer when it comes to making new metal look old, we would love to hear about that too! After receiving a lot of comments and emails about this not working on certain objects I wanted to add that not all metals will rust.

I believe it has to have iron in it in order to rust, and if it’s galvanized, stainless steel or some other type of metal that doesn’t corrode then this process won’t work. I learned this the hard way by trying to rust some galvanized buckets I had on hand and read up about it here.

If you watch the video at the top of this post you’ll see the difference in the spray vs. dunk method. Basically, the spray method will allow more of the contrast of the original metal to show through and it is easier to work in layers and add more rust if you want.

Coat the area inside the hole thoroughly with Miracle Paint to prevent further rusting, then make a patch of 3 layers of fiberglass mat soaked in Miracle Paint and apply it over the rust hole. Pesky rust stains in sinks, bathtubs, and showers are no joke. We turned to cleaning experts to find out what they do when faced with rust stains in the bathroom.

Melissa Maker, YouTube host and author of Clean My Space($13.99, amazon.com) , suggests selecting a product that will work well on your rusted surface without causing damage. “Keep in mind, rust can leave permanent stains if it has been sitting long enough.

If you want to avoid using harsh chemicals, Maker suggests trying a pumice stone for tough surfaces like porcelain. Becky Rapinchuk, founder of Clean Mother and author of Clean Mother's Guide to a Healthy Home: The Simple Room-by-Room Plan for a Natural Home ($12.59, amazon.com) , suggests using white vinegar for rust removal in the bathroom.

If natural products don't get rid of significant rust stains, Maker suggests trying “powdered cleansers, which can be quite effective. Maker says the tools you used to remove rust from your bathroom surfaces are just as important as the chemicals you used to treat the stains.

For this, Rapinchuk suggests cleaning sinks and bathtubs weekly and wiping up excess water regularly. Before you head to the hardware store for chemicals solutions, try these natural alternatives recommended by cleaning experts.

I have used Clorox, Kaboom, a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, vinegar, and the Lime-A-Way and Lysol gel toilet bowl cleaners. Of the products you’ve tried, only Clorox is alkaline, assuming you mean that brand’s chlorine bleach.

The toilet bowl cleaners you used have a pH less than 1, making them highly acidic. It’s not surprising that you reached for acidic cleaners, given that most products labeled as rust removers are.

One exception is Rust Stain Remover RSR-2000 from Alpha Professional Tools. Regent Stone Products in Virginia Beach (800-624-8210; regentstoneproducts.net) sells a 14-ounce tube for $48.

This lamp won’t turn on, but it’s too cumbersome to take to a repair shop. Avoid the liquid form, which is as acidic as the toilet bowl cleaners you used.

With any of these, be sure to follow the recommended safety procedures, such as wearing goggles and chemically resistant but rubber gloves. Professionals have access to some rust removers that aren’t sold to the public, and they have equipment to resurface stone if a cleaner doe eat into the surface.

One stone-care company that does residential work in Loudoun County is Rose Restoration in Terrified, Va. (800-413-9893; roserestoration.com/virginia-marble-polishing). Hunter Dash, the vice president, said that refinishing a residential shower typically costs about $600, provided it isn’t so big that cleaning it takes one person more than a day.

The treatment includes removing the rust (Rose uses RSR-2000), honing or polishing the stone, and sealing the surface with a silicone impregnated. Iron in drinking water isn’t a health problem, but, as you know, it does leave an ugly residue.

To reduce your ongoing maintenance, you might want to install a filtration system that removes the iron. Pressing the switch at the base of the poles used to give the options of lighting two, three or all of the bulbs.

I pushed the switch to see whether any others would fail, and sparks flew from the empty socket. You might have twisted the socket so that it was slightly askew, so that when you switched on the lamp, there was a short circuit that resulted in a burst of sparks and damage to the wiring.

A careful inspection, of course, is the only definitive way to assess the problem and figure out what needs to be replaced.
