It delivers a comfortable ride, has poised handling, and comes with a capable V6 engine. The Avalon also comes with many driver assistance features and earns an excellent safety score.

This Toyota doesn't have any glaring weaknesses, but a few rivals have more trunk space and more modern infotainment systems. We named the Avalon our 2019 Best Large Car for Families because it has the best combination of cargo and passenger space, safety and reliability ratings, positive reviews from automotive journalists, and available family-friendly features in the class.

Why You Can Trust Us We’ve researched 23 Toyota Avalon reviews, as well as hard data points like reliability ratings and cost of ownership estimates, to help you make the best car-buying decision possible. U.S. News & World Report has been ranking the best cars, trucks, and SUVs since 2007, and our staff has more than 75 years’ worth of auto industry experience combined.

Prices range from $27,920 to $33,189 and vary depending on the vehicle’s condition, mileage, features, and location. The 2019Avalon ’s five-year costs for gas, insurance, taxes, fees, repairs, and maintenance are projected to be about $27,050, or $5,410 per year.

It received more standard features compared to the outgoing model, including blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert. The 2019Avalon also gained features you couldn't get in previous models, like Apple CarPlay, a head-up display, a surround-view parking camera system, and rear cross traffic braking.

Toyota Avalon Axle: The Avalon Axle comes standard with a 9-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, a Wi-Fi hot spot, an eight-speaker audio system, satellite radio, leather upholstery, and heated front seats. Standard driver assistance features include a rearview camera, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and the Toyota Safety Sense Plus suite.

This package includes forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and lane keep assist. In addition to the Axle's standard features, the Use comes with a moon roof, synthetic leather and suede upholstery, and wireless device charging.

Toyota Avalon Limited: The Avalon Limited adds genuine leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, a head-up display, a 14-speaker JBL audio system, and navigation. Toyota offers a certified pre-owned program for vehicles six years old or less and with fewer than 85,000 miles.

Additional benefits like a CARFAX vehicle history report, towing, and roadside assistance may be available, so read the Toyota warranty page carefully. The Avalon earned the highest rating of Superior for the effectiveness of its standard front crash prevention system.

Rearview camera Blind spot monitoring Rear cross traffic alert Adaptive cruise control Lane departure warning Lane keep assist Forward collision warning Pedestrian detection Automatic emergency braking The 2019 Kia Cadenza is a good large car, though it's tough to say whether it's better than the Avalon.

The Avalon has a stronger engine and gets better gas mileage than the Cadenza, and it comes standard with a few more driver assistance features. It delivers quick acceleration and doesn't feel under powered, even in highway driving situations.

The suspension does a good job absorbing road imperfections, making this car great for your daily commute. Both rows of seats are spacious and comfortable, and it's easy to get in and out of the car, whether you're riding up front or in the back.

Synthetic leather and suede upholstery Genuine leather upholstery Ventilated front seats Heated rear seats Heated steering wheel The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave this LATCH system the highest rating of Good+ for ease of use.

The rear seats fold down, which provides some added flexibility if you need to haul larger items. While sporty, the Avalon won’t return the kind of acceleration or driving satisfaction garnered from a Kia Stinger or Dodge Charger.

All-new this year, the Avalon is offered with a potent V6 or fuel-efficient hybrid powertrain, an impressive list of standard luxury and safety features and a cavernous rear seat providing even the tallest passengers a comfortable perch. Although many competitors like the Buick Lacrosse, Chrysler 300, Chevrolet Impala and Ford Taurus are being phased out of existence, the Avalon still faces tough competition from cars like the Kia Cadenza, Kia Stinger and Dodge Charger, the latter two offered with a feature missing from the Avalon ’s roster: all-wheel drive.

Yet, for all its improvements, the Avalon retains its luxury-car smooth ride, exceptionally quiet cabin and unflappable stability. Of the four available trims, the Touring is the most desirable thanks to its steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters, Active Noise Cancellation and Engine Sound Enhancement.

The Touring’s Adaptive Variable Suspension continuously varies the shock absorbers according to road conditions up to 50 times per second. That’s why it includes the comprehensive Safety Sense Plus suite of driver assists as standard equipment on every Avalon.

You’ll still get the comfortable ride and feature-rich content of the Limited and Use trims, but with so much more in the way of performance and driving enjoyment. There’s a newfound elegance in the design enhanced by soft-touch materials, leather or Softer trimmed seats and a robust standard-equipment list.

The dash is particularly handsome, with a squared-off instrument cluster binnacle and protruding shelf vaguely reminiscent of early Toyota designs from the 1980s and 1990s. We’re happy to report that Apple CarPlay has finally found its way into the Avalon ’s cabin, but Android Auto is still waiting for an invitation.

The 2019Avalon is new from tip to tailpipes, and its more aggressive look is clearly an attempt to draw in younger buyers not interested in SUVs or wagons. There’s plenty of glass for excellent 360-visibility, and the four corners are high enough to easily figure out where the car is, regardless of the driver’s position and seat height.

Standard equipment includes 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights and taillights, Smart Key entry with push-button start, 8-way-power front seats with 2-way lumbar, Softer seating (faux leather), heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, 3-drive-mode selector (Eco, Normal, Sport), 8-speaker En tune audio with Apple CarPlay and a 9-inch touch screen, five USB ports (three up front, two in the rear), blind-spot monitor and rear cross-traffic alert, 10 airbags including rear side-impact airbags and front-seat knee airbags as well as the Toyota Safety Sense Plus system (see Favorite Features). Opt for the Use and you’ll get a few more features like 19-inch wheels, QI wireless charging and a power sunroof.

The Touring is similar to the Limited, only without the leather and with a more advanced drive-mode system, Active Noise Cancellation and an adaptive suspension. Packaged options include the JBL audio system, QI wireless charging pad, Bird’s Eye View camera and Intelligent Clearance Sonar with cross-traffic braking.

Combined output is up 15 horsepower to 215 this year, while fuel economy both city and highway improves by three miles per gallon, respectively. The 2019ToyotaAvalon Axle carries a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) starting at $36,480 including the $930 destination charge.

For the gasoline-powered models, that’s more expensive than the Buick Lacrosse, Chevy Impala or Ford Taurus, but in line with the Kia Cadenza, Chrysler 300 and Nissan Maxima. As for resale, the Avalon holds its value far better than the Buick Lacrosse, Chrysler 300 or Ford Taurus, and even better than the Kia Cadenza, Lincoln Mk Hybrid and Nissan Maxima.

MSRP includes delivery, processing and handling fee, which may be subject to change at any time. Exclude taxes, license, title and available or regionally required equipment.

In all likelihood, the 2019ToyotaAvalon in Limited trim will hit the sweet spot for the typical large sedan buyer. It straddles the line between Toyota and Lexus without the sporty features and touches of the higher-trim models.

It's also eligible for rear parking sensors with cross-traffic braking and the surround-view camera that is only offered on the top Touring trim. The redesigned 2019ToyotaAvalon bridges the gap between the Camry and its pricier Lexus sibling, the ES 350.

This latest fifth-generation model makes all the expected improvements over its predecessor with more features, stronger performance, added refinement and more efficient engines. Toyota has also equipped it with its latest infotainment system that includes Apple CarPlay smartphone integration.

Of course, interior room and comfort are still key qualities for the Avalon, and this newest model certainly delivers. Sales of big sedans have been dropping for a while now as more car shoppers gravitate toward SUVs.

All of them come with a 3.5-liter six-cylinder engine (301 horsepower, 267 pound-feet of torque) that sends power to the front wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission. The ratings in this review are based on our full test of the 2019ToyotaAvalon Touring (3.5L V6 | 8-speed automatic | FWD).

While not a sport sedan, this cruiser can handle twisty roads with relative ease for a vehicle of its size. Think about a mobile defensive end or tackle in football as opposed to an athletic linebacker.

Comfort is a strength for the Avalon and is probably the primary reason you'd consider such a large sedan. All seating positions give you ample cushioning and support for long drives or short cruises.

The ride is cushioned and makes you feel like you're shielded from the harsh roads of the outside world. The cabin feels really cozy due to the climate control's quick heating and cooling characteristics.

While there is no rattling or shaking inside the cabin, road noise is somewhat present at all times. Legroom is abundant, the driving position is superb due to its multitude and depth of adjustments, and visibility is great up front and modest to the sides and over the shoulder.

Inside, there are numerous small cabbies, plenty of upholders, and a center console that's sizable and surprisingly deep. Apple CarPlay support makes things so much better, but Android Auto is still absent.

The display is bright and responds well to inputs, but Toyota tends to lock out more functions while you're driving than other carmakers. All Avalon's come standard with a comprehensive suite of active driver safety aids that covers just about everything.

Young lady crossed a median and hit us hard, causing our car to flip and land on its top. My neighbor road in the back seat the other day and said she heard wind noise (she drives a Lexus).

When I first looked at the car, I told the salesman that I wanted to hear the audio system. If it was similar to the 2016, I told him I would not be test-driving the car, but would possibly return another day.

I DID like the audio (much better than the 2016, with crispier sounds especially at the high end), so I test drove both the Touring and Limited models. The Limited ride is slightly more compliant with a little less handling compared to the Touring (what I preferred).

If you want the luxury car feel with a price about $10k below the competition, check out the Toyota Avalon. Despite the description shown I have a Limited Hybrid (not a choice on the dropdown menu) and added the only option of surround cameras.

Very comfortable and stable handling, love the heads up display showing my speed and speed limit for where I am, really like the safety features like the variable cruise control and lane departure assist. This is my second vehicle to have the rear cross-traffic warning and it continues to be a lifesaver when backing out of parking spots.

I really like the exterior side design and especially the rear end... I tolerate the front grill but it's less obtrusive the longer you have the car. First, when there is a good cross-wind breeze there will be a low moaning sound from apparently underneath the car.

At it's worst it sounds as if something might rip off underneath the car which is downright scary. The dealer says everything underneath the car is fastened correctly, so it must be a design flaw.

Hearing the outside noise is very noticeable to me because overall the car is quiet; some people might just shrug but this really bugs me. Ever since Toyota came to my hometown to make Camry and Avalon's I've supported them by buying a number of new cars made here.

I realize in a mass production system there are going to occasionally be lemons, but it hits hard when you actually get one of them. Oh, I do think the touchscreen infotainment system is a good deal more user-friendly than the touchpad on the Lexus, something to be considered.

The Lacrosse will likely gain favor in colder-climate regions thanks to its available all-wheel drive. The Kia offers more in the way of standard features, and its warranty coverage is unassailable in the industry.

Holding the Cadenza back is lackluster performance, relatively limited cargo capacity, and a ride quality that isn't as composed. Compare Toyota Avalon & Kia Cadenza features The Chrysler 300 is the old man of this group and hasn't been fully redesigned in quite some time.

When you're thinking about carrying stuff in your new car, keep in mind that the Avalon has 16.1 cubic feet of trunk space. For a full list of Avalon models, check out Edmund's’ Features & Specs page. It is available in Axle, Limited, Use and Touring trims, all of which feature a 301-horsepower 3.5-liter six-cylinder engine.

Feature highlights for the base Axle trim includes 17-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry and ignition, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, simulated leather upholstery, a Wi-Fi hotspot, Toyota's Safety Connect emergency communications, a 9-inch touchscreen, a rearview camera, a smartphone-based navigation system, Apple CarPlay and satellite radio. Forward collision warning with automatic braking, lane keeping assist, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert are also standard.

The Limited trim upgrades include 18-inch wheels, a sunroof, a head-up display, leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, wood interior trim, a wireless charging pad, a built-in navigation system and a premium JBL audio system. The sporty Use is based on the Axle trim and adds 19-inch wheels, black exterior treatments, a rear spoiler, augmented engine intake noises, paddle shifters, aluminum interior trim, and imitation leather upholstery with faux suede inserts.

Options for the Limited and the Touring include a surround-view monitor and rear parking sensors with automatic braking. This new Avalon competes well with full-size sedans such as the Buick Lacrosse, the Chrysler 300 and the Kia Cadenza.

For the most part, they all deliver similar levels of comfort and refinement that were recently the exclusive domain of luxury brands. The Toyota Avalon is the only sedan in this group that does not offer all-wheel drive, which may be a detriment for owners in regions prone to harsh weather, but otherwise deserves a spot on your must-see list.
