In addition, this large sedan comes with lots of standard safety tech and a user-friendly infotainment system. Its V6 engine has plenty of pep, and the Avalon also manages to return some of the best gas mileage figures in the segment.

This 2021 Avalon review incorporates applicable research for all models in this generation, which launched for 2019. U.S. News Best Cars has been ranking and reviewing vehicles since 2007, and our staff has more than 75 years of combined experience in the auto industry.

To ensure our objectivity, we never accept expensive gifts from carmakers, and an outside firm manages the ads on our site. The Avalon has a higher starting price than its competition, though, so we recommend looking at well-ranked vehicles like the Toyota Camry and Kia Cadenza before making your purchase decision.

For the 2021 model year, Toyota adds Android Auto and an additional USB port to the Avalon's standard features list and pairs newly available all-wheel drive with a new four-cylinder engine. Additionally, Toyota introduces the Use Nightshade Edition trim with black exterior accents.

2017: adds several standard active safety features such as adaptive cruise control 2018: no notable changes 2019: fully redesigned with more horsepower, improved fuel economy, a larger trunk, and many more standard and available infotainment and safety features 2020: Try trim debuted 2021: gains standard Android Auto and available all-wheel drive paired with a four-cylinder engine; Use Nightshade trim introduced The 2021 Toyota Avalon starts at $35,875, making it one of the most expensive vehicles in the large car class.

Both the Camry and Avalon come standard with a generous number of advanced safety features, and both have above-average predicted reliability ratings and user-friendly infotainment systems. However, the Cadenza comes with a longer warranty, more standard safety features, and a bigger touch screen, while the Avalon delivers better fuel economy, quicker acceleration from a stop, and available all-wheel drive.

Synthetic leather upholstery is standard, and the Limited trim comes with leather-trimmed front seats. The system comes with both a touch screen and physical controls, which make it a breeze for drivers to operate.

Standard infotainment features: a 9-inch touch screen, eight speakers, Amazon Alexa, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, five USB ports, satellite radio, HD Radio, and a Wi-Fi hot spot Available infotainment features: navigation, a wireless charging pad, and a 14-speaker JBL sound system Additional standard features: proximity keyless entry, push-button start, and dual-zone automatic climate control Other available features: a moon roof, a head-up display, and ambient lighting Every model comes with an eight-speed automatic transmission that pairs well with each engine and delivers smooth shifts.

Toyota Avalon Limited The Limited trim (MSRP: $42,175) gains heated and ventilated leather-trimmed front seats, heated rear seats, a moon roof, a head-up display, ambient lighting, navigation, and a wireless charging pad. It also gains a sport exhaust and active noise control, and it comes with synthetic leather and suede front seats.

Toyota Avalon Use Night Shade Starting at $39,110, the Use Nightshade comes with everything in the base Axle trim and adds synthetic leather and suede front seats, a moon roof, a wireless charging pad, and exterior black accents for the window trim, antenna, and door handles. It boasts an airy and upscale interior, easy-to-use infotainment technology, and a wealth of standard safety features.

This Toyota also offers quick acceleration, great fuel economy, and available all-wheel drive. -- Car and Driver “The … Avalon is Toyota ’s flagship sedan, the big brother to the Camry.

MSRP includes delivery, processing and handling fee, which may be subject to change at any time. Fewer automakers offer them because consumers are increasingly gravitating to SUVs and highly capable midsize sedans.

Redesigned just last year, the Toyota Avalon simultaneously exemplifies and upends the conventions of the class. Like past Avalon's (and most large sedans), this latest model has a V6 engine that delivers smooth acceleration.

Though only slightly larger than the Toyota Camry, the Avalon has acres of legroom for all occupants and a higher percentage of premium materials. The Avalon lends itself well to long road trips thanks to the supportive outboard seats and minimal wind noise.

Well, there's not a huge amount of headroom, which is odd for this class of vehicle, and Android Auto smartphone integration is conspicuously missing from the features list. Edmund's’ Expert Rating Toyota Avalon delivers what you would expect from a large, comfortable, cruising sedan, but it is also surprisingly enjoyable to drive.

There's good power, and it has an available adaptive suspension system that is responsive on twisty roads. It's also a good value because of its high fuel economy and luxurious surroundings, which rival those of its Lexus ES cousin for a lot less money.

It is also pleasant to use in most scenarios, from long road trips and afternoon cruises to day-to-day commutes and short errands around town. While not a sport sedan, this cruiser can handle twisty roads with relative ease for a vehicle of its size.

Think about a mobile defensive end or tackle in football as opposed to an athletic linebacker. All seating positions give you ample cushioning and support for long drives or short cruises.

The leather upholstery is very soft and gives the sensation that the Avalon is more upscale than its price suggests. While there is no rattling or shaking inside the cabin, road noise is somewhat present at all times.

Legroom is abundant, the driving position is superb due to its multitude and depth of adjustments, and visibility is great up front and modest to the sides and over the shoulder. As far as controls go, there are two minor issues: The radio tuning knob can be a reach for some, and a couple of functions, such as turning on the camera view, are tucked away.

The display is bright and responds well to inputs, but Toyota tends to lock out more functions while you're driving than other carmakers. You might be disappointed if you're the type who folds the rear seats to expand the space because there's a sizable step up to the folded seats. Inside, there are numerous small cabbies, plenty of upholders, and a center console that's sizable and surprisingly deep.

The Avalon is rated at 25 combined mpg (22 city/31 highway), which is excellent for this class of car. During our mixed-driving 115-mile evaluation route, we were able to observe 26 mpg, which slightly beat the combined EPA score.

It feels close enough to the Lexus ES in this regard that someone look for a large sedan might want to consider the Avalon instead because it costs thousands less. Beyond the great deal, you also get high gas mileage, a good roadside assistance program, and free scheduled maintenance for the first two years.

The exterior, aside from the huge brace-face grille, is nondescript, while the interior delivers a composed, civil, and sophisticated style. In the context of a big family sedan, it's fun to drive due to its surprising handling capabilities and strong V6 engine.

The base Leis equipped generously, and we think many buyers would be happy with its accommodations. You're buying an Avalon because it's supposed to be a little nicer than run-of-the-mill sedans such as the Camry and Honda Accord.

The 2020 Toyota Avalon is available in Axle, Limited, Use, Try and Touring trims. All of them come with a 3.5-liter six-cylinder engine (301 horsepower, 267 lb-ft of torque) that sends power to the front wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The Axle trim starts off with features such as LED headlights, keyless entry and ignition, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, and simulated leather upholstery. You also get Toyota's Safety Connect emergency communications, a 9-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Amazon Alexa integration, and an eight-speaker audio system.

Stepping up to the Limited trim adds a sunroof, a head-up display, leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, driver-seat memory functions, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, a built-in navigation system, and a 14-speaker premium JBL audio system. The sporty Use trim builds on the Axle's features with 19-inch wheels, black exterior treatments, a sunroof, a rear spoiler, a sport-tuned suspension, paddle shifters and micro suede seat inserts.

We're now happy but how many other dissatisfied car owners will it take to get Toyota corporate to own up to the issue of a manufacturing defect? On the positive side, the ride is phenomenal, engine power is much better, safety features are great, if not a bit overwhelming.

NHTSA Overall Rating 5 out of 5 stars The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration offers independent analysis. Unlike the Camry, the Avalon uses hard plastics sparingly, and noise isolation is a bit better in the larger sedan.

If you're considering one of the more expensive V6-powered Camry models, we strongly advise checking out the Avalon as well since it's priced and equipped similarly. The Accord's cabin materials punch above the midsize class in its more Luke trims, providing a perfect Honda foil to the Toyota.

Compare Toyota Avalon & Honda Accord features Like the Avalon, the Nissan Maxima is a sedan that is slightly larger than its midsize sibling without technically being a full-size four-door. The only reason to buy it versus the less expensive Nissan Altima is for the upgraded interior.

Compared to the Avalon, the Maxima offers fewer advanced driving aids, less room, and a less comfortable ride quality. When you're thinking about carrying stuff in your new car, keep in mind that the Avalon has 16.1 cubic feet of trunk space.
