Democrats said that President Donald Trump should be impeached for “inciting sedition” Wednesday and some Republicans in Congress are privately discussing his removal, according to sources. President Trump has suggested to advisers that he wants to grant himself a pardon before leaving office, sources familiar with the discussions told ABC News.

Some members of the Cabinet are considering invoking the 25th Amendment after the president’s refusal to call in the National Guard during Wednesday’s riots, sources told ABC News. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called on Vice President Mike Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove the president following Wednesday's rioting at the Capitol.

“If we're not going to use the 25th Amendment ... than I'm not clear what it's really for,” the Delaware senator said in reaction to the events that unfolded at the U.S. Capitol Wednesday. The trauma of the day saw seemingly sincere concerns about election security melt away, amid a newfound bipartisan resolve to finish final certification of President-elect Joe Biden's victory. Denunciations and even some resignations are flowing in more steadily after Tuesday's Georgia runoff losses and Wednesday's repulsive events.

Back in June, President Donald Trump tweeted that he wanted anyone who “vandalizes or destroys any monument, statue or other such Federal property” to face punishment up to “10 years in prison.” Instead, on Wednesday, as a sitting president, he justified the behavior of rioters and domestic terrorists who violently stormed the halls of Congress as if trying to incite a civil war.

The nation will need to process the events of Wednesday for weeks and years to come, but a part of the many layers of healing will be a demonstration that those involved in an insurrection face justice, an acknowledgment that we police Americans unevenly in this country and a commitment to try to fix that. Going into Tuesday, the conventional wisdom was that high turnout was good for Republicans, who needed to make up ground due to early voting that favored Democrats.

In the runoff, with vote still outstanding, Scoff's leading by a 35,000-vote margin -- three times greater than Biden's was over Trump in November.

Many evangelicals and leaders invested money, time, and conviction towards the promise of MAGA. Most evangelicals (me included) are grateful for the Supreme Court justices he appointed and for some religious liberty concerns he addressed.

He’s burned down the Republican Party, emboldened white supremacists, mainstreamed conspiracy theorists, and more. Tempted by power and trapped within a culture war theology, too many evangelicals tied their fate to a man who embodied neither their faith nor their vision of political character.

The past half decade has offered near daily examples of people co-opting the gospel for sinful ends. Racism, nationalism, sexism, and host of other sins have found purchase within the evangelical movement in both overt and subtle expressions.

During the 2016 election, and at many points since, many evangelicals justified their full-throated support by promising to be a check on Trump ’s character. When evangelicals finally had access to the White House, they seemed unable or unwilling to use their prophetic voice to speak truth to power.

“When I served under President Nixon, one of my jobs was to work with special-interest groups, including religious leaders. We would invite them to the White House, wine and dine them, take them on cruises aboard the presidential yacht … Ironically, few were more easily impressed than religious leaders.

Committed to reaching the world, the evangelical movement has emphasized the evangelistic and artistic elements of the mission. The result of this discipleship failure has led us to a place where not only our people, but many of our leaders, were easily fooled and co-opted by a movement that ended with the storming of the capitol building.

At the root of these three causes lies our inability to live up to our calling as evangelicals: to righteously, prophetically, and compassionately proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ to the world. Our reckoning is not because we have lost worldly power but because of what we betrayed to attain and sustain it in the first place.

In listening and praying, I’ve found myself coming back to Martin Luther’s words : “Toward those who have been misled, we are to show ourselves parentally affectionate, so that they may perceive that we seek not their destruction but their salvation.” If the evangelical movement is to flourish in the coming generations, we must face (and even embrace) this reckoning.

As leaders and members we must acknowledge our failings but also understand the habits and idols that drew us to Trump in the first place. But into this temptation we hear the words of Jesus : “For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul?” (Matthew 16:26).

Pro- Trump protesters stormed the US Capitol building yesterday as Congress attempted to certify the results of last year’s election. Mr Trump said ahead of the vote to the Save America rally “we’re going to walk down” to Congress before calling on them to “do the right thing and only count the electors who have been lawfully slated”.

Mr Trump ’s claims of electoral fraud have been dismissed by independent observers and a number of legal challenges launched by his campaign were unsuccessful. Mitt Romney, former Republican nominee for President, issued a statement condemning the “insurrection” in Washington and blamed Mr Trump for the protesters action.

“Those who choose to continue to support his dangerous gambit by objecting to the results of a legitimate, democratic election will forever be seen as being complicit in an unprecedented attack against our democracy. He said on Facebook: “If the Cabinet is not, right now, preparing to invoke the provisions of the 25th Amendment, it is a complete dereliction of their duty and a betrayal of their Constitutional oath of office.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Democrat Congresswoman for New York and leading Trump critic, simply tweeted: “Impeach”. The joint session certifying Mr Biden’s election win in Congress resumed at 8pm local time (1am GMT), with heavy security details stationed to protect the politicians.

Since the protests took place, Mr Trump issued a video telling supporters to “go home” while continuing to claim the election was “stolen”. Trump ’s social media ban from Facebook and Instagram will continue until President-elect Joe Biden's inauguration on January 20th, if not beyond.

Social media has been incredibly accommodating to Trump up until this point, but both Twitter and Facebook, not to mention Instagram, TikTok and Twitch, have hardened their stance following the President’s post-riot video that continued to allege election fraud and called the rioters “very special.” Around a year ago, Musk’s net worth was around $27 billion, which wasn’t enough to rank among the planet’s top 50 wealthiest people at the time.
