What’s worse is he’s not going to engage in the normal activities that guarantee a peaceful transition. Shortly after the 2016 election, when I’d see him being particularly cruel, I would think about how he treated my father .
But there is some poetic justice here because he has been cheating for months. He told Republicans not to vote by mail, and they didn’t, but the result is he has been experiencing this slow drip-drip of disaster over the past few days.
The fact that the Republicans have done better than expected in Congress and the Senate will have made him furious. It means that people were voting against Donald Trump in this election, but not necessarily against this party.
His secretary of defense has already submitted his resignation, and I think there will be more of that. The Republicans might need him for the January run-offs in Georgia, but he could be considered a liability.
If he’s acting like a crazy person, senators are going to keep their distance. Donald Jr, Ivanka and Eric also know their relationship with their father is both conditional and transactional.
But the worst thing Donald ’s looking at isn’t financial difficulties or the prospect of jail. But when you effectively have a domestic terrorist serving as president, every hour that he remains in power is another opportunity for him to do something crazy like, say, unleash a violent mob on Capitol Hill in the hopes of burning democracy to the ground.
Pat A. Cipollone, the White House counsel, had warned Mr. Trump of just that danger on Wednesday as aides frantically tried to get the president to intervene and publicly call off rioters, which he did only belatedly, reluctantly, and halfheartedly. On Thursday, Trump ’s eldest son, Don Jr., told the crowd gathered at the pre-siege rally that Republican lawmakers needed to help overturn the election results, warning those who refused, “We’re coming for you.” He also recorded and posted to Twitter a fun little video of him, his sister Ivanka, and his girlfriend, Kimberly Guilfoyle, gleefully celebrating all the people who’d descended on Washington to help block the certification of Biden’s win.
In addition to potential charges for the president and those close to him, the Justice Department is working on identifying, arresting, and prosecuting the people who broke into the Capitol, a job made exceedingly more difficult thanks to the fact that most of them were allowed to just go on their merry way. “The scenario has made our job difficult,” Mr. Sherwin said, noting that the police, FBI agents, counter terrorism investigators, and other law enforcement officials now had to rely on social media posts and video footage to identify suspects.
Mr Trump Jr then told Congress tonal Republicans they had “an opportunity” later that day to be heroes when they gathered to count the state’s electoral votes in the House chambers. Republican House and Senate members are expected to challenge the count, which will delay the process, but is otherwise extremely unlikely to change the outcome of the election.
But their violent actions ended Trump ’s presidency in the spirit in which it began: The 74-year-old real estate magnate burst onto the political scene five years ago and urged his followers to break rules and demonize their enemies. “You’ll never take back our country with weakness,” Trump told his followers in a rally on the Ellipse in D.C. Wednesday around noon, moments before they attacked Congress.
“The president bears responsibility for today’s events by promoting the unfounded conspiracy theories that have led to this point,” Republican Sen. Richard Burr of North Carolina said in a statement. “These violent people have no respect for democracy,” tweeted Race Priests, Trump ’s first chief of staff.
But as former President Barack Obama put it Wednesday evening, as the scene began to clear: “We’d be kidding ourselves if we treated it as a total surprise.” In fact, Trump probably relished the feeling of watching his followers trash Capitol Hill, his niece, the psychologist Mary Trump, told VICE News in a phone call Wednesday night.
He told Congress over a year ago that Trump would never accept a peaceful transition of power if he lost the election. Shortly after Trump ’s defeat in November, Cohen told VICE News his view on that score remained unchanged.
Those violent exhortations eventually mixed together with mind-bending conspiracy theories that nurtured the resentment and grievance among his followers. He refused to denounce the unhinged QAnon conspiracy movement, which holds that Trump is really some undercover superhero battling blood-sucking satanists and child molesters.
As a result, Twitter locked Trump ’s infamous account for 12 hours and warned he could soon get kicked off permanently. A protester screams “Freedom” inside the Senate chamber after the U.S. Capitol was breached by a mob during a joint session of Congress on January 06, 2021, in Washington, DC.
Virginia Jefferson: How witting is Donald Trump in his worst fraud? Mary Trump : I think in the context of this question, the most important thing to know about Donald is that he’ll accept help of any kind of it benefits him.
This is a man who knows the difference between right and wrong, but he doesn’t think it applies to him if he can get help that’s going to advance a cause of his. In my family, it was kind of an unwritten rule that certain behaviors that would have been crossing a line for other people were OK if you were a particular Trump.
My dad was seven and a half years older, so Donald had the benefit, if you want to call it that, of watching his older brother be abused and criticized and humiliated. But he also had the benefit of seeing how my dad was kind and generous and how much his friends loved him.
I think of Felix Later giving your cousin Ivanka the tour of the Kremlin, letting her sit in Putin’s chair. One of the things that was important for me to convey was the concept of his having been institutionalized, essentially.
He went from my grandparents’ house to the very regimented military school, back to the house, to my grandfather’s company, to the Trump Organization, which I view as a sinecure for him. The Apprentice isn’t a place, but it was an environment that perpetuated the same things.
I keep thinking of this prank where he had a friend hijack a hearse and one of them gets in a coffin. There’s no way he could be happy because the myths that have been created about him and that he’s perpetuated and believes about himself are always in constant danger of disintegrating.
Unfortunately, I don’t believe he’s capable of being happy, because it wasn’t something to aspire to in my family. The thing that brought me to serotonin zero was your observation that the Trumps’ signature dish is iceberg lettuce and mashed potatoes.
I think it stemmed, first, from the fact that my grandmother was from this tiny village on a tiny island off the northwest coast of Scotland, and she was an awful cook. We had rice out of a box, which is fine, but she still couldn’t cook it properly.
It was the Russian dressing that’s basically mayonnaise, ketchup, and relish mixed together. So it’s not astounding that people in that family would grow up to be feeling starved.
