They're optional add-ons for Prime subscribers, for an additional monthly fee, that provide on-demand or live-streaming access to TV shows, movies and other video content from a provider. Subscribers can access the content from all compatible PrimeVideo devices, including via the Amazon Prime Video app on smart TVs and media streamers, Android and iOS phones and tablets, computers and Amazon's own Fire TV devices and Fire tablets.

Amazon also excludes access to users previously invited to share shipping benefits with a Prime member. Amazon has more than 100 different channels, and many of them are a small specialty channels that fit into genres like Kids, British, Fitness, Comedy, Romance, LGBTQ and so on.

A March 21 report says that Apple's upcoming TV service could offer the kinds of discounts Prime Channels currently lacks. Some services like Brit box, Acorn TV and CuriosityStream offer yearly discounts that aren't available on Prime channels.

Amazon The main benefit for using Prime Channels is that they provide one place -- the PrimeVideo app, or Fire tablet or Fire TV itself -- to access content from multiple providers. Content from channels is also often included in Amazon's search indexes, making it easier to find on Fire TV devices or via Alexa voice search.

In general the PBS Prime Channels have a larger selection and more current episodes than the free alternatives. Sporting events, live concerts, and the news remain the backbone of television networks, which many video services such as Netflix have generally not replicated.

The convenience of viewing your favorite program at your own leisure on any device makes these video streaming services a mainstay for modern consumers. Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video all offer a large library of television programs and movies.

Contractual agreements with major networks let these services distribute past and current seasons of popular television programs. While Netflix initially began as a DVD rental service, Hulu’s business model was established as a video streaming service founded by The Walt Disney Company (DIS), Comcast (CM CSA), and Twenty-First Century Fox (FOX) to satiate consumer demand for web-based content.

With over 30 million subscribers, Hulu’s current business model, in contrast to that of Netflix, supplements cable television rather than replaces it. However, Netflix did not launch its streaming service until 2007 and instead operated in direct competition with Blockbuster’s rental services.Netflix’s initial business model challenged brick-and-mortar Blockbuster stores by offering online movie rentals for a low monthly subscription price.

As technology and video services evolved through the early 2000s, Netflix recognized an opportunity to tap an undiscovered market. The continued growth of Netflix can be attributed to its ability to adapt to the changing environment of both the video streaming and cable industries.

Award-winning series, including “Stranger Things,” “House of Cards,” and “Ozark” further Netflix's efforts to differentiate and innovate from traditional video streaming. The company rebranded its video services as PrimeVideo in 2018, and Amazon Prime members have access to a large library of movies and TV shows.

Prime members can view recent shows like “Game of Thrones” and “Sharp Objects,” or watch classics such as “The Sopranos.” They have also started producing their own original content including the award-winning “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisey,” “Bosch,” and “Homecoming.” Probably one of the most frequently asked questions I get on my national radio show is, “Which streaming service has A&E, Fox News, HGTV or fill-in-the-blank?” It’s complicated.

Unlike network and public television, which have a lot of free streaming content, these are paid services with vast catalogs, original programs and curated lists and recommendations. We’ll look at Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hulu, along with VDU, an alternative to renting or buying movies on iTunes or Amazon.

Netflix also flip-flopped on its promise never to allow downloaded films, and now you can quickly stack your tablet with an incredible range of movies and shows. Netflix has mastered its format, and with acclaimed original series such as “Glow” and “Stranger Things,” you can access a myriad of exclusive material.

Amazon Prime Video is one big perk found in the larger Prime subscription package. Amazon has its share of original, exclusive shows, including “The Man in the High Castle” and “The Grand Tour,” that sweeten the deal and make the yearly subscription cost (and its recent price hike) more palatable.

PrimeVideo is a formidable service, and it connects you to the broader universe of Amazon products, including Echo. It isn’t as big as Netflix but has gotten a boost from a move into original television shows, including an upcoming Stephen King-based series called “Castle Rock” and “The Handmaid’s Tale,” an Emmy-winning series which just finished its second season.

Hulu is also trying to cash in on the “offline” viewing market, allowing subscribers to download their content. Hulu has a Live TV service with 50-plus channels for $39.99 (you can test it out with a seven-day free trial).

There's no monthly fee, and VDU boasts that it gets access to movies even earlier than services such as Netflix and Red box. It’s hard to beat the price, but for content with commercials, VDU’s appeal depends on your tolerance for interruptions.

Amazon Prime makes sense if you don't mind a lump investment and you plan to take advantage of the other features, such as shipping, photo storage and music. Netflix is insanely popular because it offers a broad mix of programming alongside an ever-growing slate of original shows and movies.

Hulu doesn’t quite have the depth of Netflix, but it’s still the go-to place to catch up on recent network TV shows. VDU won’t take the place of a service such as Netflix, but it may appeal to viewers looking for an à la carte alternative.

If you already buy or rent your entertainment through iTunes or Amazon, then you may not feel the need to try VDU, though it can still be worth checking out its movie collection. Alternatively, perhaps you're a fan of a particular hit show on Hulu but get the rest of your streaming fix from another source.

Later the same month, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Prime express delivery dates for various in-stock items reached delays of up to a month in the US instead of the usual 1–2 days, as Amazon struggled to meet exceptional demand and announced it would prioritize the most essential items.

The service was available only to customers with Amazon Prime membership to order up to 45 pounds in weight or up to 4 cubic feet of dry goods and non-perishable groceries for a flat delivery fee, although initially there had been no delivery charge. In the United Kingdom, Amazon signed a deal with the British supermarket chain Morrison's to provide supplies for Pantry and Fresh. The service, Amazon Key, became available for customers residing in 37 United States metro areas in April 2018.

As of 2018 the service required a Twinset or Yale smart lock and a special version of Amazon's Cloud Cam security camera. A month after the service was launched, a security expert found a flaw, since patched, in the system which would freeze the camera and stop image transmission.

The service is available in the same areas as Amazon Key's In-Home delivery, but requires no additional hardware. On July 15, 2015, in honor of the website's 20th anniversary, Amazon first held Prime Day. The inaugural Prime Day faced criticism over the quality of the discounts offered, with many of them being tied to items not in high demand.

Amazon defended criticism of the event, noting that order volume on the website had “surpassed” Black Friday sales in 2014. Also in July 2015, Amazon Prime announced it signed up Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May, formerly of BBC's Top Gear, to begin working on The Grand Tour for Amazon Prime Video, which was released in 2016.
