They’ll tell you exactly what the weather ’s doing at your own home, farm, school or business in real-time by measuring atmospheric conditions, such as temperature, relative humidity, barometric pressure, rainfall, wind speed, and wind direction. However, you will need to make sure that you only purchase a reliable and accurate unit from one of the leading manufacturers and avoid the cheaper imitations that won’t last.

Our team of editors independently research, test, and recommend the best products to help you navigate when shopping online. The WS-2902B update added additional sensor support, and now the WS-2902C has a new, user-friendly layout on the display console to make the wind information more prominent.

Through either of these networks, you will be able to remotely view real-time and historical conditions from your phone, tablet, or computer. The weather station can also integrate with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa, which means you can ask a compatible device (e.g., Amazon Echo or Google Home) for the current indoor or outdoor conditions, and you’ll receive your very own local weather report.

The WS-2902C wowed us with its connectivity and value for money, and for these reasons, it still holds the top spot as our number one recommendation. However, for those looking for a premium yet affordable option that supports additional sensors, then the Ambient Weather WS-2000 is the station to buy.

It comes with a full-color HD TFT display, which has excellent viewing angles and is very easy to read. Just like the WS-2902C, you will still get the best-in-class connectivity to a wide variety of smart home platforms, including IFTTT, Amazon Alexa, and Google Assistant.

The Davis Vantage Pro2 is as close to a professional-grade station as you’ll get without paying thousands of dollars for it. It’s also one of the few remaining stations with a cabled option in case wireless doesn’t work for you.

However, we highly recommend the Davis Vantage Pro2 for its superior accuracy, fast reporting intervals, and durability. The Pro2 is one of the very few weather stations on the market where the anemometer is separate from the temp, humidity, and rain sensors so you can mount it on a roof or a tower for the most accurate wind readings.

The display is basic but easy to read with an adjustable dimmer, and it also features a battery backup should the power go out. We’ve tested the Accurate 5-in-1 sensor unit and found its accuracy to be acceptable as long as the station wasn’t in direct sun.

Direct sunlight caused temperatures to read higher and humidity lower than it was supposed to. You’ll still get the accuracy Davis is known for, but in an integrated package that is much easier to set up due to its all-in-one sensor suite.

Like the Pro2, the Vantage Vue.JS can also connect to the Internet and allow additional sensors via the Weathering Live Hub, which sells separately. The Accurate 01007M Atlas Weather Station is a top contender among the value range weather stations.

In our tests, the Atlas scored favorably against other stations in its class, even besting the Vantage Vue.JS in temperature and humidity accuracy in direct sunlight. The Atlas includes an aspirating fan in the thermometer and humidity sensor housing, ensuring heat isn’t building up inside the shielding, where the Vantage Vue.JS does not.

If you previously owned an older Accurate 5-in-1 model, you will appreciate the upgraded sensors of the Atlas which provide far more accurate readings. Accurate has also rated the Atlas wind vane to work at speeds of up to 160mph and increased reporting frequency to every 10 seconds.

Installation of this station is straightforward, thanks to the integrated tightening knob on the sensor suite for pole mounting setups. The Accurate app and Access module make connecting to the Internet, and remote monitoring for mobile devices a breeze.

The Atlas weather station’s expand ability and the HD touchscreen display console are also noteworthy features. You can also set customizable alerts for temperature and humidity and quickly view the daily minimum and maximum readings on the console.

That said, functionality is limited, and without any expand ability, you may find yourself purchasing a full weather station in the future. Accurate’s 02007 Digital Home Weather Center is much like the La Crosse C85845, although in addition to the temperature and humidity readings for both indoors and outdoors, it also provides exact barometric pressure and an innovative weather forecast for up to 12 hours in the future.

However, it lacks expand ability options, and owners reported accuracy issues in both indoor and outdoor temperatures. With that said, accuracy overall is a disappointment, as cheaper sensors and heat insulation issues cause temperature readings to run high regularly.

Are you a farmer or gardener looking to monitor weather conditions to make sure your crops are growing in an optimal environment? This all matters in deciding what features and sensors you need when you're searching for the best weather station.

Indoor and Outdoor Temperature and Humidity Barometric Pressure Rainfall Measurements Wind Speed and Direction If you’re outdoors often, stations that measure UV index, solar radiation, or can sense nearby lightning are useful, while gardeners and farmers might find leaf and soil moisture/soil temperature sensors worthwhile.

Some models have smart home capabilities that let you do all kinds of cool things, like connect to IFTTT. For example, when it rains, your weather station could trigger your smart sprinkler system to turn off and conserve water.

A solar-powered weather station will give you years of use with minimal maintenance as you won’t need to worry about changing the batteries very often. One of these areas is construction, by using cheaper and subsequently less durable materials, the manufacturers can offer inexpensive models.

Remember that your weather station is going to be out in the elements' year round, and in potentially extreme conditions. If you can afford to purchase a high-end home weather station, do it, you’ll have something that lasts a lot longer as a result.

We understand that you’re not made of money, and in the end, the price is still going to play a role in your purchasing decision. That said, you’ll need to at least expect to spend somewhere in the order of $150-$200 USD for a decent home weather system.

The best personal weather stations can easily approach $1,000 USD with all the bells and whistles. Your rain gauge needs to be level and high enough so that it doesn’t get splash back from the ground, and away from obstructions.

If you are mounting the weather station to a house or structure, be sure to run a ground wire. The Ambient Weather Osprey WS-2902C is our Editor's top recommendation and best value for money option.

The latest models now incorporate smart home features, expand ability options, and user-friendly internet connectivity. The built-in Wi-Fi connectivity allows a straightforward setup, and the smart home options are unrivaled.

If you are an avid weather enthusiast and money is not an issue, we recommend the Davis Instruments Vantage Pro2. Weather Underground has compiled a list of compatible stations in this buying guide.

This eliminates the need to connect the weather station to WeatherBridge using a USB cable. The WeatherBridge and Abridge work with Weather Station AND Webcams.

While they aren't particularly useful for anyone living in the city, these devices can be invaluable to anyone in a rural area, property owners, or really anyone that would be in a tight spot if they weren't prepared for an impromptu thunderstorm or hurricane. Depending on the kind of information you need, you can invest in weather stations that either generate their own data with a variety of instruments, such as barometers, anemometers, and rain gauges.

But beyond the normal home weather station operation, this thing connects via Wi-Fi, so you can read all the info when you’re on the go on your mobile phone, tablet, or computer. The console has a sleek LCD that is color-coded to show you all the measurements, and that Wi-Fi connection even pulls information from Ambient Weather ’s huge network of home weather meters called Underground, so you’ll have the scale of crowdsourced data on your side.

The outdoor sensors are top-of-the-line from a tech perspective, and the indoor controls are even compatible with Google Assistant and Alexa. If you're on the hunt for a reliable weather station that doesn't cost an arm and a leg, look no further than La Crosse Technology's C85845V3.

It includes a digital console having a full color LCD screen that displays information in an intuitive and easy-to-understand way, complete with animated forecast icons and color-coded comfort level indicators. Capable of measuring temperature and humidity levels, the “TX141H-BV2” sensor can transmit recorded weather data to the console wirelessly, up to a distance of 300 feet.

Apart from temperature and humidity, the weather station can also display other information like heat index and dew point. Simply install the sensor suite, sync it with the bundled digital console, and you're good to go.

Speaking of the console, it features an illuminated color display with an auto-dimming backlight, and can receive weather data wirelessly from the sensor suite up to a distance of 330 feet. The Davis Instruments weather stations are designed more for scale and function than they are for the hobbyist weather watcher.

First off, the tried and true accuracy Davis offers in all of their stations will ensure accurate humidity, precipitation and wind readings to expertly monitor growth conditions. The outdoor sensor included in this pack is impressively rugged as it survives cyclic erosion from the elements, and all electronics are fully covered and sealed to protect from any unwanted moisture.

But the integrated indoor panel display shows a unique amount of additional stats under each category that expand on the standard information gleaned from weather stations. The sensor unit consists of a thermometer, anemometer, and hygrometer, so it can measure things such as temperature, wind speed, humidity, pressure and more at a transmission range of up to 330 feet.

Using six highly sensitive vents to check the temperature and barometric pressure, the Thermos takes measurements every 50 seconds to keep your information up-to-date and accurate to the minute so that you can plan your day accordingly. Durable, accurate, and portable sized, the Thermos won’t break your wallet with its very affordable price.

While it doesn't provide every possible weather reading imaginable, it is ideal for day-to-day used to keep your home temperate and make sure you’re ready to face the ever-changing climate. It may cost a pretty penny, but considering the sheer number of features that Davis Instruments' 6153 Vantage Pro2 packs in, the high asking price is justified.

In addition, you can also choose to have the optional UV and solar radiation sensors included in the package. Weather data is updated every 2.5 seconds and transmitted (up to a distance of 1,000 feet) to the station's companion digital console, either wirelessly or via a cable.

The console comes with a backlit LCD screen that can not only display all the data received from the sensor suite, but also a wide variety of additional information such as weather forecasts, moon phases, graphs, historical weather logs, and alarms. You can also use the optional “Weathering” service to automatically upload the weather data online for further analysis.

The 6153 Vantage Pro 2 is designed to withstand even the harshest of weather conditions and is known for surviving the front of Irma, a Category 5 hurricane. It's a breeze to mount and pair with the console, can connect to your Wi-Fi network, and it features tons of customizable display settings so you always have the information you want at your fingertips.

On top of that, it measures things such as temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, and sound, all of which can be viewed in a beautiful graph via the accompanying mobile app. You can even stream recorded data to multiple online weather services for extensive analysis.

A technology journalist for over six years (and counting), Rajah Sharma has extensive experience in reviewing a multitude of different gadgets and seeing how they fit into our modern lifestyles. Prior to joining Life wire, he was associated with The Times Group and ZEE Entertainment Enterprises Limited, two of India’s largest media houses.

If you want to remotely access readouts from your weather station, you should ensure that it has a relatively clear and stable connection to your home network, however, this isn't always necessary. Some home weather sensors have built-in LCD panels that can provide up to date information without the need for internet connectivity.

If you live in an area that's prone to hazardous weather conditions, such as hurricanes or tornadoes, home weather stations can provide you with advance warning far faster than a local weather forecast can, especially if you live in a more rural area. Beyond just providing a heads up against dangerous weather patterns, home weather stations can give you localized data on humidity and rainfall if you're an avid gardener.

Durability -Because your weather monitor is intended to measure all sorts of conditions, you’ll need an outdoor sensor that can stand up to even the snowiest storms. Some more advanced setups will also connect to your computer or mobile device, so you can view stats remotely.
