Castrated ram or billy goat (according to A Word A Day). Weather, that stuff up there in the sky, is the ‘condition of the atmosphere with respect to heat or cold, calm or storm, etc’.

Interestingly, when it was first used in Old English in the 12th century, weather always had adverse implications. The frequently misspelled whether is used to introduce a question, often outlining a choice between options.

The farmer wondered whether the adverse weather had affected his whether. In this sentence, weather means to “withstand” or “survive” something that’s difficult or dangerous.

Used in the context of ships and storms, weather means to “come safely through”. I don’t know whether I should go to John’s leaving party or Mary’s baby shower.

In many sentences, the word “whether” could be replaced with “if”, though this doesn’t work well if there’s an “or not immediately after “whether”. I don’t know if I should go to John’s leaving party or Mary’s baby shower.

If you find “whether” in a written piece, it’s almost certainly a simple typo (unless you’re reading a farming magazine). The words weather and “whether” are both in common use, though, and that’s why it’s easy for people to confuse them.

To modify those processes requires intervention in the atmosphere with a precision that is still beyond our technological capability. “Designing around the weather has usually proven to be more efficient and more reliable: irrigation rather than rain making, for example, or greenhouse farming rather than freeze mitigation.

These kinds of words are especially troublesome because spell check doesn’t always flag them. Today, I want to go over the definitions of these two words, how to use them in a sentence, and give you a few tricks for keeping them apart in your mind.

Whether is used as a conjunction in our sentences and is usually used to introduce indirect questions, often dealing with choices between alternatives. In a few days, the justices will decide whether to continue our nation’s commitment to freedom of expression.

Weather is what we tune in to watch each night on the local news to make sure our weekend plans go according to schedule. Weather most commonly deals with the state of our atmosphere such as rain, snow, temperature, etc., but as a verb it can mean the ability to withstand or endure the effects of weather.

Weather can function as many things, including a noun, verb, or adjective. The weather will be mixing things up quite a bit in Los Angeles and Ventura counties this week.

(Verb) The weather balloon will report back information to us. The phrase under the weather means slightly unwell or in low spirits; ill.

Understandably, not many people have this word in their everyday vocabulary, but it’s worth noting. If you can remember that the weather will affect the sea or the ocean, you will be set.

While these words can be tough to remember, it’s important to use them correctly because whether vs. weather have very different meanings and functions within a sentence. Weather deals with the atmosphere or the ability to endure or withstand.

If it’s been cool the past few days but the temperature is climbing today, is that weather or climate? More specifically, weather is the mix of events that happen each day in our atmosphere.

To describe the climate of a place, we might say what the temperatures are like during different seasons, how windy it is usually, or how much rain or snow typically falls. When scientists talk about climate, they're often looking at averages of precipitation, temperature, humidity, sunshine, wind, and other measures of weather that occur over a long period in a particular place.

Looking at Climate Normal scan help us describe whether the summers are hot and humid and whether the winters are cold and snowy at a particular place. Across the globe, observers and automated stations measure weather conditions at thousands of locations every day of the year.

Over time, these weather observations allow us to quantify long-term average conditions, which provide insight into an area’s climate. In many locations around the United States, systematic weather records have been kept for over 140 years.

Like the United States, different regions of the world have varying climates. Scientists who study Earth’s climate look at the factors that affect our planet as a whole.

And, even larger climate changes happen over hundreds and thousands of years. For example, scientists predict more extreme weather events as Earth’s climate warms.

Rising global temperatures are expected to further raise sea levels and change precipitation patterns and other local climate conditions. Changing regional climates could alter forests, crop yields, and water supplies.
