You get a fair price for your item only to find out that, days later, the price drops significantly. Many people continue to check prices on items after they make a purchase and are severely dismayed at the sight of future price drops.

If you’re an Amazon customer, you’ll learn about ways to take advantage of the lower price in detail. If you didn’t purchase from Amazon but are looking for a price drop refund, some information here may apply to you as well.

Initially, customers could receive a post-purchase refund for up to 30 days after buying an item. The 30-day price drop refund was shortened to a limit of 7 days from the date of purchase.

Even this eventually proved to be too big of a hit on Amazon ’s bottom line and was ultimately curtailed entirely. That may sound definitively grim, but Amazon is a company that knows the value of its customers.

The sad fact is that you’re not entitled to a refund from Amazon for a post-purchase price difference. If you’ve purchased an item and want a refund based on a price drop, head over to Amazon ’s contact page.

Many large financial institutions continue to offer price protection on their credit cards. This means that if you use their card to purchase a product, and the price drops within a specified time period, you can file a claim for the difference.

Since it’s likely that you used your credit card to purchase an item from Amazon, you can take advantage of this feature if your bank provides it. When you reach a representative, first you want to check if your card even offers price protection.

The most obvious solution, but not at all a convenient one, is to repurchase the item and return the one you purchased before for a refund. To make this option worthwhile, you will probably want to use it on an item that received free delivery.

Also, consider the additional wait for another delivery and the time it takes to process the refund. As a major online retail giant, Amazon goes an extra mile to provide its customers with the best service possible.

At the start, Amazon offered a 30-day price guarantee on any item that they sold and shipped out. This means you pretty much cannot get a price change refund nowadays, but there is a silver lining.

The refund email needs to be firm yet in a friendly tone and try to briefly explain about the price change. Needless to stay, you should be super polite regardless of whether your request gets refused or accepted.

There is a strong possibility you’ll get a refusal email as soon as your request gets processed, but all is not lost. Feel free to contact the customer service by phone and talk to the agent about your problem.

Aside from Amazon, you might be able to get a refund from your credit card company via their price protection policy. You need to file a complaint (with the credit card company, not Amazon) and request a refund on the price change.

There is no official statement about the reasons for the change, but it’s safe to assume that the increasing number of requests is one of the culprits. For example, partial returns may surge around Cyber Monday, Black Friday, or Prime Day.

I will now purchase dog food -- an item with a fluctuating price that I buy regularly -- with more confidence. Since it’s that time of the year when so many of us are purchasing items from Amazon, we thought it would be a good idea to help make things easier by reminding you how to get price -change refunds from items purchased around Black Friday, Cyber Monday or Amazon Prime Day from Amazon.

Have you ever bought something on Amazon only to see the price drop shortly after your purchase? So right now if the price changes, you can only get the refund if it’s within one week of your purchase date.

Note: This Amazon price -change refund policy only applies to items shipped and sold by Amazon. With this in mind, it’s safe to say Amazon is no longer giving price change refunds.

If you want an easier way to get there, click the “Contact Us” button on the right side of this page. If you’re logged in to your Amazon account, you may be able to add the order automatically by selecting it.

Then type: partial refund, price change into the summary and then select how you would like to contact Amazon. You can call Amazon or start an instant chat, but a simple e-mail will usually work just as well.

If you go the email route, just add a friendly message to request (not demand) for the price change. Chances are, you’ll receive the price difference without any hassle (see hundreds of comments below).

Note: All information on this page only relates to items bought from or Fulfilled by Amazon. Once we issue your refund, it may take additional time for your funds to be made available in your account by your financial institution.

State in the comments that the price dropped, and that you want to be credited for the difference. This exact situation recently happened to us when we bought my wife’s new camera.

The price dropped a couple of hundred dollars just days after we bought it. Just because you bought an item at full price and it is now on sale doesn’t mean you’ve lost out.

You don’t have consumer rights that require a refund if the price is reduced after you purchase it, but a couple of hundred dollars is way too much money to simply throw away. There are a few ways you can try to get a price drop after you bought an item, but none of them are guaranteed to work every time.

Price protection is one of the amazing services that a few rare credit cards may offer you. Other credit cards will require you to submit information on the lower advertised price you personally found.

Then, get your money back whenever you find a lower price within the time period. If you didn’t make your purchase on a credit card, then you can try out this money saving trick.

If this is the case, it might not make sense to take this route, as you’ll lose some or all of the price difference to a restocking fee. However, if the savings are greater than the restocking fee, you’ll recoup at least some difference.

It never hurts to attempt to get some extra money back, especially if the difference is significant like our case with our new camera.
