Whatever the reason, you can have the item delivered to an Amazon Locker, where your package will be kept safe until you pick it up. Once your package is delivered, you'll receive an email alert with a six-digit code to access to your locker.

There's no extra cost to use an Amazon Locker versus your regular address. The only significant downside is that Amazon gives you just three days to pick up your item.

If you fail to get your product within the three-day deadline, it is shipped back to Amazon and you are issued a refund. But as long as the locker is convenient and accessible to you, this can be a handy alternative to having items sit on your front porch.

Enter an address, for example, and Amazon asks you to refine the search by selecting your city. Use it for one delivery, select it as your new default address, or delete it and go back to choose another location.

The exact spot of the lockers vary depending on the store or shopping center. At Amazon's Whole Foods Market stores, for example, check the vestibule area just inside the main entrance.

I found the lockers in my local Whole Foods store in the corner of the vestibule near the shopping carts. Tap the Amazon Locker touch screen to begin the checkout process.

This option will work the same if you decided to print out the code or have it open on your phone. If you can't unlock the locker or you run into other problems, tap the Help button for instructions.

AmazonLockers are “self-service kiosks” located in popular places like grocery stores and pharmacies where you can pick up the things you've ordered on the site for no additional fee. The company has since expanded their footprint in recent years to Whole Foods, 7-Eleven, Century 21, Rite Aid, and other retailers in the US and abroad.

An Amazon Locker may be especially desirable for those who live in big cities and aren't comfortable leaving packages in a regularly trafficked lobby or on a doorstep. This can be found by going to Account > Ordering and Shopping Preferences > Your Addresses.

To find the closest Amazon Locker to you, do so by logging into your account here. Once your order has been delivered, Amazon will send you a six-digit code for your Locker.

A helpful tip to remember is that AmazonLockers are literally lockers, so they have size limitations. So, you can't realistically use Amazon Locker for orders like furniture.

Access to AmazonLockers depend on the store hours of the location where the Amazon Locker is. For example, if your items are at a Whole food, your access to the Amazon Locker depends on the store's opening and closing time.

One of the major benefits of Amazon Locker is being able to pick up your order on evenings and weekends. AmazonLockers are secure sites where shoppers can ship their Prime packages and pick them up at their own convenience by entering a code.

So rather than spend time queuing up at the post office, I decided to use Amazon Locker, the company’s self-service parcel pickup and delivery service. Amazon places these lockers all over big cities (often in retail stores like 7-Eleven and Spar) and lets you send your packages there or use them for returns.

The one I visited in central London was just a room in the basement of an office building, but inside, it felt weirdly calming. Inside, I found my designated block of lockers (there were five or six different rows, each comprised of different-sized compartments stacked together like Tetris blocks) and punched in the drop-off code into a waiting touchscreen, while an embedded camera peered up my nostrils.

The moment I hit the enter button, a locker the size of my parcel sprang open a little way down the wall, with a satisfying whir. Image: James Vincent Now it’s stupid to rhapsodize too much about a self-service locker system, but, for me, the whole experience was proof of how Amazon ’s obsession with logistics and automation can make your life a little easier.
