The source of the claim about Amazon workers receiving food stamps was a January 2018 report by the nonprofit group Policymakers Ohio, which estimated that roughly 700 Amazon workers in Ohio (more than 10 percent of the company’s employees in the state) receive Supplementary Nutrition Assistance Program benefits : Based on that average, more than 700 Amazon workers received benefits that month, or more than one in every 10 of those Ohioans employed by the company.
We were unable to find any research or data on Amazon workers’ availing themselves of food stamps in other states. Having a gross monthly household income at or below 130 percent of the federal poverty limit is an important factor.
On 1 February 2018, Amazon ’s jobs website listed seven open warehouse positions in Ohio. According to a major 2016 report by the non-profit Institute for Local Self-Reliance, a group that advocates for more sustainable community development, Amazon ’s warehouse workers across 11 metropolitan areas in the United States earned, on average, 15 percent lower than could be expected for a worker in that industry (page 39).
In its 2016 report, the ISR summarized employment at the company’s fulfillment centers as “grueling work for lower pay than average”: Employees describe running across warehouses that sprawl the distance of 17 football fields; production quotas, or “rates,” that can be set 60 percent higher than the industry standard; and a disciplinary system that tracks workers’ every action and inflicts “points” for any deviation from Amazon ’s standard.
Associate performance is measured and evaluated over a long period of time as we know that a variety of things could impact the ability to meet expectations in any given day or hour. Instead, Grit Post, where the meme appears to have originated, said in a list of sources that they had used Amazon ’s 2016 numbers.
I met and worked with some of the most hardworking and genuine people but management was awful. They treated low level employees very poorly, retaliated against those who raise concerns, and were demeaning towards people of color. It is important to note that this is not true of all teams.
I met some other teams who had a wonderful work culture and work-life balance. I admired the values outlined by Amazon Senior Leaders, but they don't mean much when poor management is leading the work.
Amazon is great, offer many opportunities for associates and benefits in day one for full time. Was this review helpful? The work here is pretty straight forward.
The shifts can have you walking upwards of 30,000 steps/day sometimes so be ready for that (depending on which department you get placed in). Was this review helpful? The job pays really well as an EMT who made 11hr to jumping to 26hr starting it was a no-brainer coming from an ER.
Was this review helpful? I've only worked in the Prime Now warehouse and as a shopper inside Whole Foods. There's not a lot of growth nor management helping you succeed to move up within the company. Was this review helpful? I work at Amazon fulfillment in Bessemer Alabama.
I work in decant on the incoming dock and am over the non-con overnight. If you work overnight you will get your base $15/hr plus a differential pay of $2:50 starting out.
Your basic work day is going in and standing for 3-5 hours in one spot doing repetitive motions. The pay was good for overnight work but everyone seemed like they wanted to go home as soon as they entered.
Was this review helpful? At warehouse work you get paid fairly at least. You definitely have job security as long as you're on time and don't make a bunch of mistakes.
On your feet, little room for mistakes, training is iffy, have to keep yourself mentally entertained. Was this review helpful? If you just want to work hard and get paid good money, this is the place for you.
If you want to make friends, socialize, play on your phone, or move into management this might not be the place for you. Was this review helpful? Good place to work with great pay.
Seems the squeaky wheel gets the grease and I wasn't squeaking. Metrics driven company touting “Customer-centric” is in my opinion, a contradiction. Was this review helpful? I really had great time working on Amazon.
