Regional mountains also provide weather protection, and as a result, Victoria has the lowest rainfall on the West Coast and consequently enjoys the most days of sunshine. Even in January the temperate climate allows outdoor activities such as fishing, sailing and golfing in the coastal areas.

The west coast of VancouverIsland is exposed to the moisture-laden westerly winds blowing off the warmer Pacific Ocean. Up slope, and on the windward slopes of the Monastery, Selkirk's, Purcell's and Rocky Mountains, much higher precipitation and cooler temperatures are evident (Revel stoke area). To the east of this mountain chain, on the Interior Plateau, there exists a much drier and more continental climate.
