Kenya's weather is dictated by monsoon winds, which help to make the high temperatures of the coast more bearable. The winds also influence the country's rainy seasons, the longest of which lasts from April to June.

Nairobi is situated in Kenya's Central Highlands region and enjoys the pleasant weather for most of the year. The sunniest time of year is December to March, while June to September is cooler and often more overcast.

Located on Kenya's south coast, the popular coastal city of Mombasa enjoys consistent temperatures that remain hot throughout the year. While the humidity levels are high on the coast, ocean breezes prevent the heat from becoming uncomfortable.

Mombasa's climate is comparable with that of other coastal destinations, including Lamp, Vilify, and Tatami. The best time to travel Northern Kenyan highlights like Lake Turkey, and Similar National Park is during the Southern Hemisphere winter (June through August).

July and August are also prime time for beach vacations, thanks to the warm-but-not-too-hot temperatures (typically around 80 degrees Fahrenheit) and light rain. October and November can be good months for seaside vacations, as long as you don't mind the occasional intense rain.

The 'long rains' of April and May can turn the tracks through the parks into quagmires and make the beaches along the Indian Ocean coastline hot and very wet, so this isn't the best time to travel. Fantastic game viewing can be enjoyed now, with The Great Migration at its height in the Masai Mara providing lots of action at the river crossings as countless wildebeest and zebra gather and cross the Mara and Talk Rivers. However, it's a lovely time to travel if you want to avoid the crowds but still have excellent game viewing opportunities.

If you're hoping to go on safari, the best time to visit Kenya is from June to October, the country's dry season. Of course, if you're looking to explore Kenya on a budget, you may want to avoid peak season altogether, because a slight compromise on weather or wildlife sightings usually means much cheaper rates for tours and accommodation.

Millions of wildebeest and zebra start the year in Tanzania's Serengeti National Park, then gradually make their way northward to the more plentiful grazing grounds of the Masai Mara.
