San Antonio ’s Pearl district is now a flourishing neighborhood with local businesses, a robust events calendar, and the site of the much lauded Roman & Williams designed Hotel Emma. The former brewery that managed to survive prohibition (they turned their premises into an ice provisioner) sat empty for years until Silver Ventures Group saw the area’s potential in 2001.

In addition to stocking the brewery’s original product, Southerlies brews many of their own labels, and the only way to truly experience the breadth of their offering is with a flight. One of the original tenants at the Pearl site, the Culinary Institute of America has been focused on good food in the area sits its opening.

As a CIA graduate, it’s no surprise that Chef Johnny Hernandez chose this location to set up La Gloria. Focused on Mexican street food, the menu is an outrageously delicious combination of tacos, torts, gauchos, and more.

The vibe is reminiscent of a local block party, with an outdoor bar, dogs at patrons feet, and music, both live and speaker sent buzzing aloud. This Hotel Emma located general store holds the perfectly curated combination of picnic essentials for an afternoon along the San Antonio River.

Lunch is also worth popping in for with elevated sandwich fixings crammed between thick slices of pinch-ably soft house-made bread.

This is the spot for house-made cured dishes from pickles to charcuterie (regular and fancy specialty meats like Pineapple Chile Pork Gillette). Think sausage stuffed quail, jalapeño corn fritters with mole and brisket tacos.

The Tiny Finch offers earthy, one-of-a-kind gifts, homeward, clothing and jewelry. Likewise, Felix Modern POP offers a dash of color and candy to Pearl.

For the modern gentleman, The Sporting District carries clothing, accessories and lifestyle merchandise. A brew aficionados dream, its stunning restoration preserved the brewery, yet the space feels more intimate than industrial.

Contributing to the big-hearted hospitable vibe is the handcrafted margarita all guests are issued in the library immediately upon check-in. You’ll also find repurposed Co2 tanks and bottle fillers transformed into chandeliers.

Sip a cocktail atSternewirthbar and you might get seated inside a brewery tank. For light eats, check out the Larder Café, a bustling mercantile dishing out prepared meals like salads, house-made biscuits and gourmet groceries.

For a more substantial bite, hit up Supper, an American eatery that offers creative, seasonal dishes. For sure the next time I visit, I’m going to park myself next to the rooftop pool with another handcrafted margarita by my side.

Boiler House also offers a massive bar featuring an extensive wine list of over 120 labels, craft beers from all over Texas, and a creative cocktail menu full of whiskeys, traditional bourbons, Scotches, tequilas, and mescals. Botha is a Peruvian-Asian restaurant with dishes handpicked by Chef Geronimo Lopez based on his experience and travels throughout Asia and Latin America.
