The Amazon center was immediately evacuated and shut down Tuesday night and was expected to remain closed until Wednesday evening. Authorities in Jacksonville, Florida, said they were dispatched to reports of shots fired at an Amazon fulfillment center at 7:24 p.m.

It is early in the investigation, which is ongoing, but there were “multiple witnesses” to the shooting and interviews are being conducted, he said. “There were some indications there may be a domestic relationship between the two parties ... but it's too soon to release any exact details,” the lieutenant said.

A woman, who works at the center and asked to remain anonymous, said she heard gunshots while she was in the cafeteria. “It was actual gunshots, and we walked a couple steps, you see two people laid out by the stairs,” she said.

Employees were moved outside to wait in the parking lot while police investigated. In June, a 20-year-old man who was standing in line to apply for a job at the warehouse was shot and killed.

In that incident, two other people suffered minor injuries when two suspects opened fire, Jacksonville police said. The building is the third Amazon facility to open in Jacksonville and began operating in 2017.

Amazon employees who were in the building at the time of the shooting will have counseling available to them, according to the spokesperson. This is the second multiple shooting at the Amazon center on Pecan Park Road this year, the last one exactly three months ago on June 29, police said.

Officers ran into the building immediately and found two people with gunshot wounds, police said. Strong said, adding it is a “massive facility” and detectives were questioning people as fast as they could.

Strong said the man and woman appeared to be employees at Amazon and early indications are they were in some sort of relationship. Amazon officials said the building was immediately evacuated when the shooting began.

“Police are actively investigating the event, and we will continue to provide updates as soon as we can,” the notice said. A weapon was recovered at the scene, while the condition of the injured man was unknown, police said.

The Amazon fulfillment center was previously the scene of violence three months ago on June 29 when a 20-year-old man applying for a job was fatally shot and two others were injured in what the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office described as an ambush. The 855,000-square-foot center began operations in 2017 and held its grand opening officially in April 2018.
