They're one of the hottest gadgets out there, increasingly replacing laptops as a primary way to enjoy the web, all your media, e-books, and more. Here you'll find computer tablets from brands like Fire, Apple, Microsoft, Acer, ASUS, Lenovo, and Samsung.

Consider a 2 in 1 convertible which gives you the power of a laptop when you need it, and the convenience of a tablet when you want it. With the Amazon app for Android tablets you can easily search across Amazon ’s catalog of millions of products to quickly find what you are looking for, browse and shop by department, and check out lightning deals and deals of the day.

And just like the web experience, Android app customers enjoy the same functionalities of the Amazon Shopping Cart, Wish Lists, order history, payment and Amazon Prime member shipping options, and 1-Click settings. Customers are able to shop any of Amazon's sites around the world from a single app.

Permissions:On Android devices with GPS, we access location information only so that we can provide customers with the option to send packages to a nearby Amazon Locker (a feature only available in the US and UK currently). On Wi-Fi only products, this permission isn't applicable, but Android's security model requires us to ask on all installations.

We require “Read Contacts” permission to make it easier for you to find and invite friends from your phone address book. * Microphone access: search Amazon catalog of products using your voice.

If you have an Android phone and you’re used to using Gmail, Google Maps, the Chrome web browser and other apps you may be disappointed that you can’t install them on a Fire tablet. There are loads of big-name apps available including Netflix, catch-up TV services plus lots of free games and apps which are more often than not Android versions, because underneath that dark interface, all Amazon Fire tablets are based on the Android operating system.

Those cost more but come with a protective case, a great two-year warranty that covers accidental damage and a 12-month subscription to its kids content, Amazon Kids+, which includes videos, games, apps and books. Briefly, here’s a summary of the key specs of the latest versions showing how they compare.

The Fire HD 8 Plus has the same specs listed below, but has 3 GB rather than 2 GB of RAM, wireless charging and comes in an extra color: Slate. Its screen may be only one inch larger than the Fire 7, but it makes all the difference.

There's also more RAM (even more in the Plus model), more storage and you can expand that by up to 1 TB using a micros card. You get Alexa, too, and again she's hands-free and works even when the tablet is in standby with the screen off, so you can consider it like an Echo Dot.

The Plus model costs £20 / $20 extra and has wireless charging and works with the optional wireless charging dock (shown in the photo) to turn the tablet into a sort of Echo Show. But note that the standard model also has Show Mode, so you only need something to prop it up, and maybe to plug it in to the mains to get the same effect.

It comes with a bumper case, year's subscription to Fire for Kids / Freebie Unlimited and a two-year warranty. It's great value for under at this price as it has a decent screen and the option of expanding storage with a micros card.

The reason you may want to steer clear is that saying that it isn't hugely powerful is an understatement. Obviously, you shouldn't expect a lightning-fast tablet for this price and you'll have to put up with waiting a little longer for apps to load than on the Fire HD 8 and 10.

Basically, it's the best option for kids because they are unlikely to complain about it... unless you're buying it to replace a broken iPad, which won't go down well. The screen had good colors and viewing angles, but the low resolution of 1024×600 means it's not as sharp as the HD 8.

Remember that you don't necessarily have to buy the Fire 7 Kids Edition. The 10.1in screen is obviously bigger, but the resolution of 1920×1200 means it has a higher pixel density of 224ppi.

With so much great content out there and the ability to download it for offline viewing, you may be wondering what size micros card is best for the Amazon Fire Tablet. By going with one of the larger internal storage options for your tablet, you will likely spend quite a bit more than you would if you were to add a micros card for expansion.

As you may be aware, Fire tablets run Amazon's Fires, which is a forked version of Android that does not include the Google Play Store, apps, or services. That being said, Amazon's own App Store offers a ton of content consumption options, including many (if not most) of the streaming video, music, and games that you might want to download.

It's better to gamble on getting more storage than to have to keep removing and re-downloading your favorite content when you want to play, watch, or listen offline. Depending on what type of media (and how much) you want to carry on your Fire tablet (be that games, movies, music, photos, etc.

The memory capacity in the latest round of Fire tablets can be expanded up to 512 GB, so we recommend picking up at least 128 GB or even 200 GB micros card for the best balance of price to storage. Right now, you can get a 200 GB micros card for under $30 at Amazon, which is $10 cheaper than going from 32 GB to 64 GB of included storage on the latest Fire HD 10.

Photograph: Samuel Gibbs/The Guardian Amazon claims it’s twice as durable as Apple’s iPad Mini 4 and it certainly feels like it could take a knock or two without much issue. One of the best bits about the Fire HD 8 is its speakers, which are mounted in the side (or top if held in landscape orientation) and produce fairly good, clear and loud audio, for a tablet.

It has good viewing angles, solid colors and is bright enough to be watched indoors, but struggles a bit outdoors. Photograph: Samuel Gibbs/The Guarantee new Fire HD 8 has the same 1.3GHz quad-core processor and 1.5 GB of RAM as the last one, and performs similarly.

It will handle most apps and games perfectly fine, if with slightly longer load times and slower frame rates than you might be used to on a top-end smartphone. With the brightness set at around 70%, the Fire HD 8 easily lasted long enough between charges to view three movies with a bit of light internet use in between and battery to spare.

Playing games hurt the battery life a bit more, as did setting the brightness to max, but all in you’ll get around a day’s usage out of the HD 8. You have to hold the home button to get it to listen to you, but the speakers are loud and clear enough to hear the answer to your query from across the room.

You get twice the storage, much longer battery life, a slightly better screen and much better speakers, which make the Fire HD 8 quite a compelling package, if all you want to do is consume media. There are some cheaper no-name alternatives, but with the Fire HD 8 you get a brand name, support and experience very difficult to match at £80.

If you’re just looking for a cheap tablet to watch a bit of video on, play the odd game and occasionally find the answer to a question, this is the one to buy.
