Beijing-based ActionS oft sued Amazon for trademark infringement in 2018, but the American tech giant argued that it started using its AWS brand as early as 2002, the paper says. You’ve probably read about China ’s censored internet that blocks access to popular platforms like Instagram, Facebook, Google and many western media outlets.
Note : This article contains affiliate links, which means that at no extra cost to you, I will be compensated if you use some of these services I recommend. The good news is that in many cases, such as this link to Express VPN, I’ve negotiated special deals to get you 3 months of free service.
Don’t get me wrong: it’s a challenge to use Amazon in China, but that’s not because they’ve been blocked by the Chinese government. In fact, Amazon operates a Chinese-language service quite freely (although their market share is terrible).
There are literally hundreds of VPNs, but the majority of expats in China use either Express VPN or NordVPN since they’ve had a reliable track record. Believe me, a VPN is something that pretty much every expat in China uses (I’ve used Express VPN for more than 10 years now).
When you’re connected to this foreign server, it makes Amazon think that you’re in the United States, for example, and that they can stream video, music and anything else you want. It’s a bit different based on what device you’re using, though, so I’m going to walk you through the most common VPN setups.
I’m going to use Express VPN as an example, but it’s pretty similar no matter which VPN service you end up choosing. Setting up a VPN on your computer in order to use Amazon in China is very simple.
The mobile phone setup for Express VPN (or pretty much any good VPN service) is equally simple. Once the VPN app is downloaded and you’ve logged into your account, everything is pretty much the same.
Find your server, click the power button and wait for it to turn green. It used to be that adding a VPN to a media device like the Amazon Fire TV stick was a challenge only the super tech-savvy could perform.
Using a simple solution like Express VPN and/or NordVPN will give you access to all of this geo-restricted content and restore the value that a Prime membership provides. Trees attempts to answer this question by comparing the various revenue streams for Alibaba vs Amazon in an interactive dashboard. The gap between Subscription Revenues for both companies is likely to continue expanding on the back of Amazon ’s wider and more local focused reach.
Despite the law of large numbers being against Amazon, the U.S. company’s reach is likely to remain an order of magnitude higher than that for the Chinese giant. That said, a side-by-side comparison of the two companies shows that Alibaba’s title of ‘ Amazon of China really does fit.

Surprisingly, the founders of Trees discovered that along with most other people they just did not understand even the seemingly familiar companies around them: Apple, Google, Coca-Cola, Walmart, GE, Ford, Gap, and others. This might include you though you may have invested money in these companies, or may have been working with one of them for years as an employee, or have consulted with them as an expert for a long time.
The platform uses extensive data to show in a single snapshot what drives the value of a company's business. Trees is currently used by hundreds of thousands of investors, company employees, and business professionals.
The extent of the data China collected from the surveillance chips was not clear from the report, and no consumer information was known to have been stolen, according to Bloomberg Businessweek. The Chinese government, Apple, Amazon and other involved companies disputed the report to Bloomberg Businessweek, and the FBI and U.S. intelligence officials declined to comment.
The report came just hours before Vice President Pence was to deliver a stinging rebuke of China in a speech at the Hudson Institute in Washington. The United States and China are locked in a bitter and escalating trade war, in which hundreds of billions of U.S. and Chinese products are under tariff.
The reported manipulation of electronics supply chains to U.S. companies are certain to sharpen long-standing questions about the crucial but uneasy relationship between the world’s two leading economies. American companies design and sell leading technology products, such as servers, laptop computers and smartphones, but they are built and assembled largely in China.
“This report provides more evidence that China ’s pattern of behavior is a serious threat to national security and supply chain risk management,” said Sen. Mark Warner (Va.), the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee. U.S. officials long have worried about the potential for altered microchips or other components to be secretly inserted into products and shipped to the United States and elsewhere, opening doors to long-term spying on computer users and their information networks.
The surveillance microchips reportedly could have connected to outside computers and secretly downloaded software to bypass security protections, such as passwords or encryption keys, stored elsewhere on the affected servers, enabling remote computerized spying. The operation, which Bloomberg Businessweek attributed to a Chinese military unit that specializes in hacking hardware, worked by inserting a tiny, innocuous-looking microchip onto motherboards in servers produced by Supermicron, a leading supplier of such equipment, based in San Jose.
A Bloomberg Businessweek report on October 4 cited 17 unidentified sources from intelligence agencies and businesses claiming that Chinese spies had placed computer chips inside equipment used by about 30 companies, including Apple and Amazon .com, and multiple US government agencies, which would give Beijing secret access to internal networks. Hardware maker Supermicron had said on Monday it would review its motherboards for any proof of malware chips, but this report was quickly superseded by Liang’s statement.
“Bloomberg should act responsibly and retract its unsupported allegations that malicious hardware components were implanted on our motherboards during the manufacturing process,” Liang said in the statement. Belinda Tan, a spokeswoman for Bloomberg in Singapore, did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment.

After seven months of care and behavior training with ASPCA staff, Beau finally found her forever home. It costs the ASPCA £7.50 a night to provide a warm bed and food for a dog and Beau needed round-the-clock isolated care as she had highly contagious and potentially fatal arbovirus.
Thanks to generous donations from AmazonS mile, dogs like Beau are able to get the care and attention they need. The support received from AmazonS mile makes a difference to the 276,000 patients we treat each year.
