The move sets the stage for a showdown with Australia ’s entrenched retail establishment such as Mayer and JB HIFI, as well as with labor unions if Amazon ’s German example is anything to go by. Amazon said it was moving its “director of consumables” for Germany, Rocco Brainier, to the role of Australian country manager.

Melbourne is an obvious choice of location for Amazon ’s warehouse given its proximity to Australia ’s east coast, where about four-fifths of the country’s 24 million population lives. Another local Amazon boss, director of operations Robert Bruce, said in a statement that the warehouse, about 42 KMS (26 miles) from Melbourne, would stock “hundreds of thousands of products for delivery to customers across Australia ”.

The arrival of the e-commerce giant, one of the fastest-growing companies in the world, is expected to shake up our retail sector by changing Australian online shopping habits. From this perspective, it’s easy to lose sight of the fact that Amazon originally started as a book-selling site that has now also become a rapidly expanding book publisher.

Our research indicates Amazon ’s effects on Australia ’s book culture have already been profound and the impact will only intensify when the company has a physical presence here. At present, Australians who want to buy books online must weigh up the added cost and delay of postage rates and delivery speed.

The arrival of Borders in Australia in 1998 and its collapse along with the Angus & Robertson chain in 2011 created turbulent conditions for Australian booksellers, but independent stores such as Readings, Berkelium Books and Avid Reader with loyal customer bases not only survived, but in many cases expanded. We also shouldn’t forget that the department stores threatened by Amazon ’s arrival, such as Big W and Kmart, are also major booksellers in Australia.

Contractions in that sector would have particularly dramatic consequences for the visibility and sales patterns of Australian commercial fiction titles. Australia ’s strong, independent bookstore sector has fought off big business in the past.

This means it is able to influence consumer purchasing decisions, and can consequently negotiate aggressively for discounted stock from publishers. Editing, for example, has traditionally taken place within the publisher’s office, but will increasingly become a freelance service that authors can purchase on an as-needs basis.

Small presses, like the University of Melbourne’s brand new Rattan Street Press, will need to make use of innovative production and marketing strategies to find their place in a ratified production and distribution system dominated by Amazon. Genre Worlds: Australian Popular Fiction in the Twenty-First Century and New Tastemakers and Australia ’s Post-Digital Literary Culture.

Amazon will build its first robotic Australian fulfillment center in Sydney’s west in a bid to accelerate order processing times and improve the retailer’s competitiveness. The company announced plans for the massive 200,000 square meter facility on Tuesday, which will also be its largest in Australia with “around the same land size as Tonga Zoo”.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the “construction and operation of this center will deliver far-reaching benefits for the people and businesses of NSW”. Taking income tax benefits into account, news.com.Au reports the company’s total loss for the period was $8,924,727 from a revenue of $17,381,136.

But regardless, it’s nothing to write home about, and certainly seems out of whack with the record-breaking user numbers Amazon Australia ’s country manager Rocco Brainier said the site experienced on the day of the launch. Amazon ’s Australian launch was long-anticipated, but is largely viewed now by both consumers and businesses as over-hyped and under-delivered, with customers complaining about the high prices and low range of products on the site.

Founder of Trike Bike Michael Coates told SmartCompany in April Amazon Australia was “all fizz and no substance”. The owner of another Australian small business, speaking to SmartCompany anonymously, says their Amazon sales have been extremely slow over 2018.

But while this business owner acknowledges big losses are the norm for companies like Amazon, they believe it could be numerous years before Amazon Australia stops losing money. In the wake of its largely disappointing Australian launch, Amazon has totally nixed its subscription fees for businesses on its marketplace, but intends to start them again in 2019.

This business, which makes just “a handful” of sales a month on the site, says it will likely cease selling on the platform once subscription fees begin again. Sure, vinyl may be making a resurgence among audiophiles with lots of great inexpensive turntable options, but wrangling physical records is a pain for casual music fans.

While most offer music catalogs of more than 50 million songs, each has its own unique pros and cons. We've also left out services that only play music in a radio format and don't offer à la carte listening.

In most cases you'll need to build your library and playlists from scratch if you switch, unless you use a music locker service. Apple Music also makes the ideal companion for an iPod Touch, which, amazingly, is still a thing. There's also ton of curated playlists, many hand-crafted by musicians and tastemakers, but it lacks the robust sharing options built into Spotify.

Best for: Amazon Prime members who want to save a few bucks on a decent music catalog. Instead of playlists, YouTube Music offers well-curated radio stations, which are the standout features.

Unlike playlists, which are finite and contain specific tracks, radio stations play endlessly and are updated often. One of the most popular streaming radio services in the US, Pandora now offers the à la carte Premium and no-ads Plus tiers.

Its audio quality is among the lowest available, even on the Premium subscription (192Kbps) It doesn't really offer enough of an incentive for an upgrade compared to the others here Not available outside the US Screenshot: Ty Pendle bury/CNET Soyuz launched in the US in February 2019 with a clean interface, hi-res audio streams (which unlike Tidal's don't need an MA decoder) and the ability to buy lossless music.

French stalwart Deezer has been operating in the States since 2016, and it has a lot to offer including a free tier (mobile only) and 56 million tracks. Until recently this list excluded Pandora, but now that the company also offers a Premium tier we've included here.

Slacker Radio, Tune In and iHeartRadio are other radio-style services that play music stations based around a theme or artist, without you explicitly picking tracks. If you're musically inclined, constantly on the hunt for your favorite new band, a streaming service like Spotify or Tidal may be more up your alley.
