Texas education leaders and Amazon Web Services announced the creation of associate's and bachelor's degree programs Thursday at a Dallas event attended by Secretary of State Ruth Hugh's, the state's higher education commissioner and several Texas lawmakers. Local and state education leaders have looked for ways to strengthen Texas' workforce and prepare students for jobs of the future.
The company will help Dallas, Irving and Houston independent school districts teach computer and data-related skills to younger students, too. The college programs could increase the pool of job candidates for the Seattle-based parent company's cloud computing subsidiary.
Ken Eisner, director of worldwide education programs for Amazon Web Services, said the fast-growing company can't find qualified employees fast enough. Amazon started AWS Educate, a global initiative to teach more students cloud technology skills, in 2015.
It has launched similar education efforts in Virginia, Louisiana and Los Angeles. Eisner said the degree programs can make the tech workforce more diverse by reaching underserved, minority and rural students in different parts of Texas.
“While we have a booming economy today, and we have tech companies expanding and moving into the North Texas region, we also see individuals being left behind,” he said. Since Amazon selected National Landing in Arlington, Virginia as the home of our second headquarters, it’s been a busy two years of building, hiring, and establishing ourselves as a dedicated community partner.
“To mark this milestone, we will donate $9 million to help support a broad range of local community organizations that make up the fabric of the diverse, vibrant region we now call home.” $1 million to organizations that are advancing the cause of racial equity and community empowerment, such as Bridges to Independence, Offender Aid and Restoration, and the Arlington Branch NAACP Scholarship Program.
Amazon is grateful to the community, as well as the many elected officials, civic leaders, local businesses, nonprofits, and associations who have talked with us and shared their views over the past two years. In response to COVID-19, we have supported local restaurants during our 10,000 meals in May program, provided critical COVID-19 funding to the Arlington, Alexandria, and Greater Washington Community Foundations, and launched a statewide effort sponsoring computer science education in high-need schools across the Commonwealth.
Breaking ground on our first new office buildings and gaining community approval for our open space public park plan. The philanthropic donations announced today will build on this progress, and we look forward to the future as we continue to grow Amazon teams in Virginia.

Our fulfillment network is made up of state-of-the-art technology and a variety of building types and sizes to support processing orders, but it’s truly our people who bring the magic of Amazon to life for our customers. In these buildings, Amazon employees pick, pack, and ship customer orders such as books, toys, and housewares.
In these centers, associates pick, pack, and ship bulky or larger-sized customer items such as patio furniture, outdoor equipment, or rugs. Specialty Amazon ’s fulfillment network is also supported by additional types of buildings that handle specific categories of items or are pressed into service at peak times of the year such as the holiday season.
Thanks to a collaboration across city agencies, engineers, a “carrier hotel” and others, an Amazon building is heated by recycling excess energy from a neighboring data center. Eventually the catalog grew exponentially until the final product today, which sells just about any item a person could possibly want to buy.

Todd Wagner and a small group of friends established Watermark Community Church in Dallas, Texas in November 1999. Watermark was born out of a desire to connect people with the richness, adventure, and fullness of life that comes through Christ alone and to reach the churches, de-churched, dead-churched, and unmoved.
Todd serves as Senior Pastor and Elder at Watermark, which has become one of the largest and fastest-growing churches in the United States. Watermark is also home to The Porch, one of the largest ministries to young adults in the country, as well as the Church Leaders Conference, which exists to encourage and challenge other leaders and faith communities with God’s vision for His Church.
Todd and his wife, Alex, alongside their six children and grandchildren, love to live, laugh, and serve together in Dallas, Texas.
