Mike Flannery, regional director of Amazon Operations, said the operations will employ the latest version of robotics that automate the shipping of smaller items such as books, electronics, small household goods and toys, leaving employees to focus on larger items and other tasks. Mike Flannery, regional director of Amazon Operations, announced two new fulfillment centers in the south suburbs.

Highlighting the advanced design of the fulfillment centers, Pritzker said they reinforce Illinois’ image as an innovative state, with substantial know-how in technology. Labor organizers have frequently criticized pay levels and working conditions at Amazon facilities.

“I understand in the Southland why people would welcome Amazon, but they need to have a sober assessment of what the company represents,” said Roberto Clack, associate director of Warehouse Workers for Justice. Amazon said it is providing $700 million nationwide for employee skills training helping people qualify for higher positions and build careers.

Its other fulfillment centers are in Joliet, Aurora, Crest Hill, Edwardsville, Minolta, Money, Romeoville, Waukegan and Wood Dale. Amazon has inked a lease for a 300,000-square-foot distribution center in Chicago ’s Southwest Side, marking its 12th warehouse in the state.

Since March, Amazon will have leased 11 million square feet of distribution centers and warehouses in the Chicago area, according to Train’s. Despite community opposition, the board endorsed the project by an 8-6 vote, a rare close decision for the commission.

Amazon has planned distribution centers in Pullman and Gage Park, and operates an existing warehouse on Goose Island. Hilo Redevelopment Partners is building a distribution hub for Target at the old Crawford Coal Plant in Little Village.

California-based developer Prolongs is spearheading the construction of the 23-acre Amazon center between Halted Street and Senor Avenue in the Wilson Industrial Corridor that would include 487 parking spaces. The developer’s attorney anticipated 12-16 trucks would visit the site daily, a claim Cordova later disputed.

Nearly 1,900 feet of publicly accessible river walk with seating areas and “floating wetlands” in the river are included in the plans. Renderings of a publicly accessible river walk that would be part of a massive shipping and logistics facility for Amazon in Bridgeport.

Provided Cox said the logistics and distribution sector is “growing rapidly” and Chicagoans “have to accept” the facilities will be a part of the future economy. His staff worked with Amazon to ensure community benefits like the river walk, and each new application would be a “test case” to learn how best to situate distribution centers across the city, Cox said.

Cordova said city officials shouldn’t put their “head in the sand” and fail to recognize “the land use changes that have been occurring have created high-priced properties on the North Side and removing those industrial locations.” Instead, the city must urge developers to build more environmentally friendly sites, including electric fleets.

Commissioners Andre Broomfield, Sarah Lyons, Linda Earl, Deborah Moore and Granola Reyes joined Cordova in voting against the proposal. The seven other votes in favor were all city officials: Cox, Department of Transportation Commissioner Via Big, ALD.

The 75-unit tower from New York-based Nah la Capital is located across the street from the Newberry Library and Ogden Elementary School. The commission also approved an application to the city’s Lakefront Protection Ordinance by the Japanese American Service Committee Housing Corporation and Related Midwest to complete a $35 million renovation of the Hawk Terrace senior living facility at 920 W. Lawrence Ave. in Uptown.

A planned development application by The Society for the Danish Old People’s Home to build two “lateral additions” to the existing three-story facility at 5656 N. Newcastle Ave. in the 41st Ward. The added “wings” would not increase the building’s maximum allowed number of beds but would provide for 13 additional parking spaces.

According to Beale, Amazon needs nothing more than that before forging ahead with construction of a 40-acre distribution center at 104th and Woodlawn at a site once owned by Ryerson Steel. A source at the company said that while no deal has been finalized, it is considering a delivery station at the Pullman site, not a full warehouse.

In the company’s lexicon, a delivery station is a smaller operation than a warehouse, or what it calls a fulfillment center. It is designed to help Amazon complete “last mile” deliveries for customer expecting quick service.

In its official statement, Amazon said, “We are constantly exploring new locations and weighing a variety of factors when deciding where to develop sites to best serve customers, however, we don’t provide information on our future roadmap.” We need to get things done in a timely manner in order to make this happen by Oct. 31,” Beale said Monday.

Hours later, however, the mayor’s office acknowledged that, although it hasn’t “connected with Amazon on this deal directly,” city planners have “spoken with the developer to discuss underlying zoning” for the proposed site.“ “The City welcomes opportunities to drive inclusive economic growth for our South and West Side communities, and Pullman is one of our priority areas,” a statement from the mayor’s office said.

Beale said Chicago Neighborhood Initiatives and the Ryan Companies, Amazon ’s designated developer, have been in contact with the city and “started clearing” the tree-filled site last Friday. The land is owned by CNI, a non-profit created by U.S. Bank that is run by David Dog, who served as planning and development commissioner and Chicago Park District superintendent under former Mayor Richard M. Daley.

For years, Beale has touted the site at 104th and Woodlawn as a potential home for a Chicago casino. “We have the logistics center at Olive Harvey where we’re getting people with .

Peter Strazzabosco, a spokesman for the city’s Department of Planning and Development, had no immediate comment on Beale’s request to fast-track permits and the Class 6B property tax break. An Amazon source said the company typically seeks no tax breaks to build a delivery station.

This constitutes a substantial reduction in the level of assessment and results in significant tax savings,” the website states. Train’s Chicago Business was the first to disclose the Amazon warehouse project.

We looked at how Walmart integrated distribution technology as part of its strategy that led it to become the largest US retail by sales revenue in 1990. Back in 1990, when Walmart’s revenue first exceeded its primary retail rivals Sears Roebuck and Kmart, Amazon did not yet exist.

Clearly, Jeff Bezos likes books, but as an entrepreneur, his approach was agnostic as to which product line or business model to employ as his entry point into the burgeoning Internet marketplace. Bezos observed that online book sales offered unique advantages over traditional brick-and-mortar bookstore retail operations.

Once Amazon achieved a critical mass of available inventory, it could offer consumers a breadth and depth of titles that far surpassed anything that could be physically stocked in a local bookstore or retail book chain. This “long-tail” approach plays to the strengths of Amazon ’s centralized distribution system that offers rapid the fulfillment to consumers at low cost.

In its quest to offer books to customers at the lowest possible cost, Amazon also aggressively pursued what could charitably be called a “non-traditional” strategy for the location of its fulfillment center warehouses. In round numbers, tax-free shopping on the Internet was equivalent to a constant 10% discount on Amazon ’s already low book prices.

These affiliates, which promoted Amazon on their websites in exchange for a small finders’ fee, were a local nexus (or physical location) in the state according to California. After some serious negotiations, both California and Texas governments achieved their goal and Amazon began collecting sales tax.

Additionally, Amazon has approximately 25,000,000 square feet of fulfillment center warehouse space outside of North America. It may come as a surprise to frequent users of Amazon ’s famous patented ‘One Click’ sales button that even in 2014 the fulfillment process is still fairly manual.

They have to unload, unpack, inspect and place all the shipments into warehouse storage at the proper location, which is recorded in the computerized central inventory system. These mobile computers also monitor the efficiency of the picker, who must maintain a brisk schedule as they walk throughout the facility, often more than 10 miles each day.

Diva promises its integrated robot and ‘pod’ hardware and software solutions will speed up cycle times as consumers increasingly demand next day or even same-day delivery. Increase flexibility and scalability to handle unexpected surges in consumer preferences as well as traditional seasonal shopping effects (winter coats versus bathing suits).
